Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs First

The silence on the other side of the heavy steel door felt heavy, suffocating, and loaded with lethal intent. My finger hovered over the smart lock's emergency override button, but my brain was racing at lightspeed. How had an unknown operative gotten our secret passphrase? There were only three people who knew it: me, Elena, and Miller.

Unless... Miller’s communications had been compromised. Or worse, someone inside the district attorney's office had leaked the protocol to Thorne’s syndicate.

"Claire? Is that Miller?" my mother whispered anxiously from the dark hallway behind me, clutching the duffel bags so tightly her knuckles had turned completely white. "Shouldn't you open the door?"

"Quiet, Mom," I hissed under my breath, stepping backward into the shadows of the kitchen hallway while keeping Lily securely pressed against my chest.

On the porch, the heavy knocking resumed—harder this time, impatient and aggressive.

*Bang! Bang! Bang!*

"Open the door, Mrs. Sterling," a second, unfamiliar voice called out from the dark lawn beside the porch. "We know you're inside. You can come quietly with us, or we can take the door down with a hydraulic ram. Either way, you're coming."

They weren't just here to intimidate. They were a professional extraction squad sent to secure the decryption keys and eliminate any witnesses who could link Alexander Thorne to the Vanguard embezzlement scandal.

I didn't panic. Panic was for amateurs. I was a forensic accountant; I lived in a world of numbers, variables, and calculated contingencies.

"Mom, go to the utility room behind the pantry," I whispered fiercely, grabbing my mother by the arm and guiding her toward the back of the house. "There’s a reinforced panic room built into the foundation—Marcus had it installed two years ago to store his gun collection and emergency cash, thinking he was a tactical prepper. Use the digital code: *4049*. Get inside with Lily and lock the steel deadbolt behind you."

"What about you, Claire? I'm not leaving you out here alone!" my mother protested, tears welling in her eyes.

"I’m not staying," I said, pressing my encrypted laptop bag into her arms. "Take the laptop and the master flash drive. They’re looking for the decryption keys. If I draw them away from the house, you and Lily will be safe until Elena’s backup arrives."

Before my mother could argue further, a deafening crash echoed through the foyer. The smart lock on the front door blew inward in a shower of splintered metal and electronic sparks as the mercenaries deployed a breaching charge.

Heavy tactical boots hit the hardwood floor of the living room.

"Clear the ground floor!" a gruff voice shouted. "Find the woman and the child!"

I shoved my mother gently toward the pantry corridor, slamming the hidden utility door shut behind her, and sprinted silently toward the back patio exit that led out to the dark, rain-soaked backyard garden.

As I slipped out into the cold night air, the heavy scent of wet pine and damp earth filled my lungs. Behind me, I heard the faint sound of boots kicking open doors in the kitchen.

They were inside the house. And I was out in the open. But I had something they didn't: I knew every dark corner of this property better than anyone alive. And I was ready to play offense.
