Chapter 18 - Echoes of the Past

As winter settled over the city, frosting the towering glass skyscrapers with delicate silver webs of ice, life inside our suburban estate returned to a warm, vibrant rhythm. Lily was now three months old, smiling brightly every morning, her little hands clutching my fingers with astonishing strength.
My mother had decided to move in permanently, converting the guest suite into her art studio, filling the house with the scent of oil paints and fresh coffee.
One evening, while checking my email after putting Lily down to sleep, a strange message appeared in my encrypted inbox. It came from an unlisted, burner IP address routed through three different European proxy servers.
There was no subject line. Just a single block of text:
*“He knows you still have the secondary decryption keys. Thorne’s remaining associates aren't finished yet. Watch your back.”*
I stared at the screen, my forensic instincts instantly snapping to attention. The message wasn't signed, but the digital signature embedded in the metadata pointed to an old encrypted communication protocol used by Vanessa Cole’s defense team before her trial began.
Someone was still out there—a lingering shadow from the syndicate attempting to rattle my nerves.
I didn't panic. I didn't call Elena in a panic. Instead, I opened my terminal, ran a trace-back script on the IP routing packets, and isolated the physical relay server origin point within four minutes.
The signal wasn't coming from Europe. It was coming from a public Wi-Fi router located inside a coffee shop three blocks away from federal prison block C where Marcus was currently housed.
A cold, knowing smile touched my lips.
Marcus hadn't given up. Even behind bars, surrounded by concrete and razor wire, he was still trying to play puppet master through whatever desperate, low-level associates he had left on the outside.

I picked up my phone and forwarded the trace data directly to Miller with a single three-word note: *“Clean up crew.”*
