Chapter 19 - The Last Gambit

The trap was sprung three days later on a freezing Friday night outside a dimly lit diner near the federal penitentiary. Miller and a team of federal marshals intercepted a low-level former Vanguard broker named Toby Vance—Vanessa Cole’s cousin—while he was attempting to transmit a threatening encrypted flash drive to one of Thorne’s remaining offshore handlers.

Toby didn't even put up a fight. When the federal badges flashed under the flickering neon diner sign, he dropped his laptop onto the icy pavement and raised his hands immediately.

"I didn't do anything! Marcus made me do it!" Toby sobbed hysterically as the zip-ties clicked around his wrists. "He promised me a cut of the hidden Cayman accounts if I sent those messages to scare Claire into dropping the receivership!"

Miller picked up the laptop, popped out the encrypted flash drive, and slipped it into his pocket with a satisfied smirk. "Tell Marcus hello from the chief auditor," Miller told the terrified broker as the marshals shoved him into the cruiser.

Back at the federal safehouse/office, I plugged Toby’s recovered flash drive into my isolated desktop terminal.

Inside was a single recorded audio file—a prison phone call between Marcus and Toby recorded two days prior. I hit play through my headphones.

Marcus’s voice echoed through the speakers, sounding desperate, ragged, and unhinged: *"You have to scare her, Toby! Tell her Thorne's men are still out there! If she doesn't drop the federal receivership audit by Monday, the board will throw out my appeal! Do whatever it takes!"*

I listened to the whole recording without blinking. Then, I exported the audio file directly to the federal prosecutor's office, attaching a formal motion to revoke Marcus’s communication privileges permanently due to ongoing witness intimidation and criminal solicitation from inside a correctional facility.

Judge Harrison signed the emergency order before midnight.

Marcus was officially cut off from the outside world—forever silenced, completely isolated, and left to rot in his own miserable cell with nothing left to echo except his own failure.
