Chapter 15 - Grounded at the Tarmac

Within forty minutes, Elena’s tactical convoy had intercepted Alexander Thorne’s private motorcade right at the edge of the active runway at the municipal airport. A sleek, white Gulfstream G650 sat idling on the tarmac, its turbine engines whining with a deafening roar, its boarding stairs half-lowered against the asphalt.
As our SUVs skidded to a halt in a spray of gravel right in front of the aircraft’s nose gear, three federal marshals piled out, their weapons drawn and pointed toward the aircraft door.
Alexander Thorne—the billionaire hedge fund titan who had secretly funded Vanguard’s shadow syndicate—appeared at the top of the boarding stairs, wearing a cashmere overcoat and sunglasses, flanked by two private bodyguards.
"What is the meaning of this outrage?" Thorne shouted over the roar of the jet engines, stepping down the stairs with an aura of untouchable entitlement. "I am a registered federal elector and a state infrastructure donor! You cannot detain—"
"Step down from the aircraft, Mr. Thorne," Elena commanded, holding her federal badge high as she walked toward the stairs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice."
Thorne’s bodyguards instinctively reached inside their jackets, but one look at the dozen assault rifles trained on them by the federal marshals made them slowly raise their empty hands.
Thorne forced a tight, arrogant smile, adjusting his coat. "You have no jurisdiction here, Counselor. My legal team will have you disbarred by sunset. This is a political witch hunt."
I stepped out from behind Elena’s SUV, walking slowly across the tarmac until I stood directly beneath the aircraft stairs, looking up at the billionaire who thought he owned the world.
"It’s not a witch hunt, Mr. Thorne," I said clearly, my voice carrying over the jet wash. "It’s a balancing of the books."
I pulled my encrypted flash drive from my pocket and held it up in the sunlight. "Every shell company, every Cayman account, every illegal political kickback—it’s all verified, encrypted, and already submitted to the federal grand jury. Your empire is bankrupt."
Thorne’s arrogant facade finally shattered. The color drained from his face as reality set in. He realized there was no bailout coming, no political favor that could save him now.
Federal marshals surged up the stairs, grabbed Thorne by his expensive cashmere sleeves, and forced him down onto the tarmac in handcuffs.
As the billionaire was shoved into the back of our transport van, I turned away and looked out toward the horizon where the sun was breaking brilliantly through the clouds.
