Chapter 13 - The Observation Deck Showdown

Panic rippled through the courthouse gallery like wildfire. Federal marshals drew their weapons, forming a defensive perimeter around the grand jury room, while Elena rushed over to my side, her eyes wide with alarm.

"Claire, stay here," Elena commanded, gripping my arm. "I’m calling tactical backup—"

"No," I interrupted, pulling my arm away with cold resolve. "He’s looking for me, Elena. If I stay behind closed doors, he’ll only hurt someone else to get to me. I’m going up."

Before Elena could stop me, I turned and headed straight for the private service stairs leading up to the fourth-floor observation deck. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my mind was ice-cold. Marcus had finally dropped all pretense of corporate polish; he was cornered, desperate, and acting on pure, rabid instinct.

I pushed open the heavy fire door at the top of the stairwell and stepped out onto the glass-enclosed observation deck.

The panoramic view of the city skyline stretched out beneath us through towering floor-to-ceiling windows, but my eyes locked immediately on the center of the room. There, standing near the ledge with a cold steel pistol pressed firmly against the temple of a terrified young court clerk, stood Marcus.

His clothes were torn and stained with mud, his hair matted with sweat, and his eyes bloodshot and wild. When he saw me step out of the stairwell, a twisted, manic grin spread across his face.

"Well, well... look who decided to show up," Marcus laughed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "Step right up, Claire! Come see what your precious audit got you!"

"Let her go, Marcus," I said, taking a slow, steady step forward, keeping my hands visible and open. "The building is surrounded by federal marshals. You have nowhere to run."

"Run? Who’s running?" Marcus snarled, pressing the barrel a fraction of an inch harder against the weeping clerk’s head. "You ruined my life! You took Vanguard, you took my reputation, you put me in handcuffs in front of everyone I ever knew! I lost everything because of your little forensic games!"

"You ruined yourself, Marcus," I replied calmly, my voice echoing off the glass walls. "You embezzled millions, you beat me four days after childbirth while I held our daughter, and you thought you were untouchable. But the numbers don't lie. And neither do I."

Marcus’s face contorted with blind fury. He shoved the terrified clerk away toward the stairs—the girl scrambled out of reach in an instant—and turned the pistol directly toward my chest.

"Then I’ll take you with me," Marcus screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger.
