Spring arrived early that year, melting the last stubborn patches of winter snow across the manicured lawns and blooming cherry blossom trees outside our home. Lily was now six months old, laughing and crawling across the living room rug while my mother cheered her on from the sofa.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my corner office at Sterling & Associates Global, looking out over the glittering skyline of the financial district. The city looked different now—cleaner, brighter, and anchored by integrity rather than greed.
My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was an encrypted notification from Elena: *“Federal receivership fully finalized. All audits passed with 100% compliance. The books are pristine, Claire.”*
I smiled, typing back a simple reply: *“Always balanced.”*
There were no lingering shadows, no fear of the dark, and no one left to tell me what I could or couldn't do.
