Chapter 12 - Dawn of the Grand Jury

The morning of the grand jury hearing dawned bright and clear, the autumn sun cutting sharp golden beams across the imposing granite columns of the federal district courthouse. Media vans choked the surrounding streets, satellite dishes pointed toward the steps like mechanical sunflowers, and reporters shouted questions over one another as federal marshals formed a tight security cordon around Elena and me.
As I walked up the courthouse steps, wearing a pristine white blouse and a dark tailored suit, my head held high, flashbulbs popped in a blinding frenzy. The image of my bruised face from the night of the assault had leaked to the press twelve hours earlier, igniting a national firestorm of public outrage across social media platforms. Millions of people were following the hashtag #JusticeForClaire, demanding accountability for corporate domestic abusers and corrupt billionaires alike.
Inside the grand jury chamber, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Twenty-three sworn citizens sat in the tiered gallery, their expressions serious and attentive. At the prosecutor's podium stood Elena, her posture immaculate, her voice steady and commanding as she called the session to order.
"The State calls its primary expert witness: Chief Forensic Auditor Claire Sterling," Elena announced clearly.
I walked to the witness stand, placed my hand upon the leather-bound Bible, and swore the oath without a single tremor in my voice.
For the next two hours, I dismantled Alexander Thorne’s financial empire piece by piece. Using high-resolution digital diagrams displayed on the courtroom screens, I traced the flow of illegal funds from dormant client accounts at Vanguard Financial through a labyrinth of Cayman shell corporations straight into Thorne’s personal political super-PAC. I showed the jury the forged signatures, the backdated contracts, and the explicit email correspondence where Marcus and Arthur Pendelton plotted to strip my family trust of every last asset.
When I finished, total silence hung over the grand jury room. Even the seasoned federal judges looked stunned by the sheer scale and audacity of the white-collar conspiracy.
"Thank you, Mrs. Sterling," the grand jury foreman said quietly, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "The evidence is... staggering."
As I stepped down from the witness stand and walked back toward the gallery, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chamber suddenly swung open with a loud bang.
Everyone turned. Standing in the doorway, panting heavily, was a frantic federal marshal with his hand resting on his holstered firearm.

"Counselor! We have a code red!" the marshal shouted. "Marcus Sterling has breached the building. He’s holding a hostage on the fourth-floor observation deck!"
