Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Hallways

By Monday morning, the news of Chad Sterling’s epic public humiliation had spread through Oakridge High like wildfire, dominating every chat room and school forum.

Digital video clips filmed from three different angles by gawking students were already trending on local social media channels, garnering hundreds of thousands of views under viral captions like *'Billionaire Prankster Destroys School Bully.'*

Leo Vance walked through the grand double doors of the school with his usual quiet dignity, completely ignoring the intense whispers and lingering stares following his every footstep.

For years, Leo had kept an extremely low profile, deliberately hiding his family’s immense wealth behind thrift-store hoodies and modest behavior just to see who his true, genuine friends were. Now, that carefully guarded secret was shattered beyond all repair.

Chloe Davies, the school’s star journalist and fiercely independent editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, intercepted Leo right by his metal locker.

Her expressive eyes were wide with a fascinating mix of journalistic curiosity and cautious respect.

‘Leo Vance, care to explain why you neglected to mention during our history project that your dad practically owns half the global tech sector?’ she asked, leaning against the adjacent locker with a playful, knowing smirk.

Leo chuckled softly, closing his locker door with a muted thud. ‘It’s complicated, Chloe. People treat you fundamentally differently when they know who your family is, and honestly, nine times out of ten, it’s not for any good reason.’

Chloe nodded in deep, empathetic understanding, having witnessed firsthand how utterly superficial high school social hierarchies truly were.

‘Well, for what it’s worth, I think it’s hilarious how you put Chad in his place,’ Chloe whispered, her smile widening.

On the exact opposite side of the sprawling, noisy cafeteria, Chad Sterling sat at his usual VIP table like a fallen emperor in exile.

His usual entourage of bootlicking sycophants had dwindled down to absolute zero. Even his longtime girlfriend, Jessica Vance—who shared no relation to Leo despite the identical surname—looked across the room at Chad with obvious disgust and disappointment.

Marcus Sterling had spent the entire weekend screaming at the top of his lungs in their sprawling hilltop mansion, warning Chad that their family fortune was now hanging by a thread because of his intolerable juvenile arrogance.

Chad’s knuckles turned bone-white as he gripped his smartphone, staring at a flashing push notification reporting that his father’s corporate stock had plummeted following heavy rumors of a hostile corporate takeover led directly by Julian Vance.

A dark, twisted hatred began to fester deep within Chad's chest, directed entirely at Leo Vance.
