Chapter 8 - The Catacomb Confrontation

Chad moved with desperate, frantic stealth across the stone patio, his heart hammering wildly against his ribs like a trapped bird trying to escape.
His family was utterly ruined, his father was facing imminent federal indictment, and his entire social life had been completely obliterated—all because of the Vance family.
In Chad’s fractured, delusional mind, if he could somehow destroy Julian Vance’s most prized personal possession or steal highly incriminating documents from his private study, he could turn the tables and force a desperate ransom negotiation.
With a sudden, violent shove, he forced the sliding glass door of the ground-floor conservatory open with a sharp crack, slipping silently into the darkened, echoing mansion.
He had no idea whatsoever that he was walking directly into a military-grade, high-tech security trap.
As soon as Chad crossed the threshold of the main hallway, all interior security lights flashed instantly from soft amber to blinding, hostile crimson.
Automated steel security grates dropped down from the ceiling with thunderous, booming crashes, sealing off every single exit and trapping Chad inside the corridor like a terrified rat in a maze.
A calm, synthesized artificial intelligence voice echoed chillingly from the overhead speakers: *'Intruder detected. Security lockdown initiated. Local federal authorities have been dispatched.'*
Panic seized Chad instantly, washing away his false bravado.
He swung his heavy metal crowbar wildly at the nearest smart camera, shattering its glass lens in a blind, hysterical rage.
‘Come out and face me like a man, you cowards!’ he screamed at the top of his lungs into the empty hallway, his voice cracking with utter desperation.
Instead of Julian Vance appearing from the shadows, however, a calm, young voice echoed cleanly from the top of the sweeping marble staircase.

‘Looking for someone, Chad?’
Leo stood there casually with his arms crossed over his chest, looking down at the trapped teenager with absolute, unshakable calm, proving once again that true power never had to raise its voice to be terrifying.
