Chapter 6 - The Unforeseen Twist

Before Chad’s arm could complete its downward arc, a sudden, blinding camera flash went off right beside them, followed by a sharp, commanding voice that cut through the music.
‘Drop the glass right now, Chad, unless you want your family’s pending bankruptcy case turned over immediately to federal prosecutors for criminal asset concealment.’
It was Jessica Vance, stepping out from behind a massive marble pillar with her smartphone raised high, recording every single second of the confrontation in high definition.
Jessica had secretly been gathering hard evidence of her father Marcus’s illegal offshore bank transfers, utterly disgusted by her family’s rampant corruption, greed, and toxic behavior.
Chad froze instantly, his arm suspended mid-air, the red wine sloshing dangerously close to the rim of the crystal glass.
He stared at his own girlfriend in absolute, paralyzed disbelief.
‘Jessica? Are you completely insane? Whose side are you actually on?’ he hissed through clenched, white teeth.
Jessica smiled coldly, her expression entirely devoid of warmth or affection.
‘I’m on the side of actual justice and truth, Chad. Unlike you, some of us in this world actually have a conscience,’ she snapped back.
The surrounding gala guests had now stopped talking entirely, turning their attention completely toward the dramatic spectacle unfolding by the grand staircase.
In a matter of seconds, professional security guards converged rapidly, their heavy hands resting firmly on their utility belts as they moved in to escort the disruptive teenager out of the venue.
Leo watched the scene unfold with quiet fascination, realizing that the Sterling family drama went much deeper than simple teenage arrogance and high school bullying.
As security grabbed Chad firmly by the shoulders and dragged him backward toward the exit, Chad screamed bloody curses that echoed off the crystal chandeliers, vowing violent revenge against everyone who had betrayed him.

Chloe squeezed Leo’s hand gently, whispering, ‘Remind me never to get on your family's bad side, Vance.’
Leo smiled faintly, though a heavy, lingering sense of unease settled deep in his chest. People like Chad Sterling, backed aggressively into a corner with nothing left to lose, were always the most dangerous kind of enemies.
