Chapter 13 - Unraveling Threads

The rain intensified as midnight approached, pounding relentlessly against the asphalt of Teterboro Airport. Private jets sat parked on the tarmac, their sleek silver bodies reflecting the harsh yellow floodlights.
Inside Hangar 4, Eleanor Bennett paced back and forth, holding a expensive leather briefcase tightly against her side. She wore a dark trench coat and wide designer sunglasses despite the late hour. Two heavily armed private guards stood by the doors, scanning the perimeter.
"Is the pilot ready?" Eleanor demanded, looking at her diamond watch. "We were supposed to wheels up ten minutes ago!"
"Weather conditions are causing a slight delay, Mrs. Bennett," one of the guards replied smoothly. "We should be clear for takeoff in fifteen minutes."
"I don't have fifteen minutes!" Eleanor snapped nervously. "The SEC has already issued warrants for Arthur and Maverick. It's only a matter of hours before they trace my personal logistics!"
Suddenly, the lights inside the massive hangar flickered twice and plunged into total darkness.
"What the hell?" the guard yelled, pulling his sidearm. "Emergency lights on!"
Before the guard could react, a heavy thud echoed through the dark, followed by a grunt of pain. One of the guards collapsed onto the concrete floor.
"Who's there?!" Eleanor shrieked, backing up against the landing gear of the Gulfstream jet, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.
The emergency red backup lights hummed to life, casting an eerie, crimson glow across the cavernous hangar.
Standing near the open hangar door was Viktor Cross, wiping his hands on a cloth, while the second guard lay unconscious at his feet.
"Viktor!" Eleanor gasped, relief briefly washing over her face before turning into sudden suspicion. "What are you doing here? Did you secure the rest of the physical records?"
"I secured my payment, Eleanor," Viktor said coldly, stepping aside.
Out of the shadow stepped Amy and Julian, walking side-by-side into the red-lit hangar.
Eleanor's face contorted with utter disbelief and pure rage. "Julian? Amy? How did you find me?"
"You always were predictable, Mother," Julian said, his voice ringing clearly across the hangar. "Whenever you panic, you run to the Teterboro charter line. You've been using this exact getaway strategy since the 2008 audit."
"You traitor!" Eleanor screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Julian. "I built this empire for you and Maverick! Everything I did was to ensure the Bennett family remained at the top of the social ladder!"
"No, Eleanor," Amy spoke up, her voice steady, powerful, and ringing with absolute clarity. "You didn't do it for your family. You did it for your own bloated ego. You used Maverick, you destroyed your husband, and you tried to burn down my father's life work because you couldn't stand losing control."
"I am Eleanor Vance Bennett!" Eleanor roared, clutching her briefcase. "I don't lose to little girls like you!"
"You already lost," Amy said calmly.
Sirens blared suddenly in the distance. Blue and red emergency lights flashed brightly through the translucent windows of the hangar as half a dozen federal law enforcement vehicles surrounded the building.
The double side doors were kicked open, and armed federal agents flooded the hangar, weapons raised.
"Federal agents! Put the briefcase down and put your hands on your head!" the lead agent shouted.
Eleanor froze, looking frantically around the room. She looked at Viktor, who simply crossed his arms. She looked at Julian, who stood firm, unyielding. Finally, she looked at Amy.

Amy gave her a subtle, elegant nod—the exact same nod she had given at the altar of the Millbrook Inn.
The briefcase fell from Eleanor's trembling fingers, hitting the cold wet concrete with a sharp metallic clatter.
