Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Two days after the canceled wedding, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Bennett Financial Headquarters in Midtown Manhattan stood imposing against the grey overcast sky.
In the penthouse boardroom on the 50th floor, an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors was in progress. Arthur Bennett sat at the head of the long oak table, looking visibly aged, dark circles hollowed out beneath his eyes. Eleanor sat beside him, her expression a rigid mask of corporate composure. Maverick sat at the lower end of the table, staring down at his phone, ignoring the cold, judging glares from the board members.
"The stock has dropped eighteen percent in forty-eight hours," one senior board member announced, slamming a report onto the table. "Our primary investors are panicking. The rumors about missing funds in offshore accounts are spreading fast. Arthur, we need answers!"
"The rumors are entirely fabricated by my former prospective daughter-in-law," Arthur lied smoothly, resting his hands on his cane. "Amy Sterling is a bitter woman seeking revenge for a private personal dispute. Bennett Financial remains completely solvent."
"Does it?" a voice echoed from the doorway.
The board members turned around.
The double doors swung open. Amy walked in, wearing an impeccably tailored cream blazer suit, her posture commanding and fearless. Right beside her was Julian Bennett, carrying a leather briefcase, accompanied by two high-profile investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Maverick sprang out of his chair. "Amy! What the hell are you doing here? You can't just barge into a private board meeting!"
"Sit down, Maverick," Julian said coldly, his voice cutting through the room with absolute authority.
Arthur's face turned pale. "Julian... what is the meaning of this? Why have you brought SEC officials into my boardroom?"
Amy stepped up to the edge of the conference table, placing both hands on the polished wood. She looked directly at Arthur, then at Maverick.
"I'm here to return something that belongs to you, Arthur," Amy said smoothly. She reached into her handbag, pulled out a flash drive, and tossed it into the center of the table. "It contains full transaction records for Vanguard Horizon. All three hundred million dollars of stolen funds."
Gasps filled the room. Board members sat up straight, turning to look at Arthur in sheer shock.
"That's a lie! Fabricated evidence!" Maverick shouted, his face turning red with panic. "She's trying to frame us!"
"Is she?" Julian spoke up, stepping forward and opening his briefcase. He pulled out thick stacks of certified documents. "These are signed bank transfers from Cayman International, bearing Maverick's personal signature and Arthur's authorization stamp. Over the past eighteen months, they siphoned funds meant for green development projects into private accounts to cover up bad margin calls."
"Julian! You traitorous snake!" Eleanor screamed, rising from her chair, her regal composure completely shattered. "He is your father! Maverick is your brother! How could you sell out your own blood?"
"My blood stopped being my family when they turned into criminals," Julian replied without a flinch, his eyes cold as ice. "You pushed Maverick into this, Mother. You enabled his greed. And you tried to ruin an innocent woman's life to cover your tracks."
Amy leaned closer to Maverick, looking him dead in the eyes. "And let's not forget Penelope, Maverick."
Maverick flinched, stepping back slightly. "Penelope is a liar!"
"Penelope gave a full sworn statement to the district attorney's office two hours ago," Amy revealed, a cold, triumphant smile gracing her lips. "Including physical evidence of your coercion and assault in Room 237."
The room fell into absolute silence. Maverick collapsed back into his chair, trembling, his hands shaking as he realized his empire of lies was crumbling into dust.
The SEC investigators stepped forward. "Arthur Bennett, Maverick Bennett... you need to come with us for questioning regarding corporate fraud, embezzlement, and securities manipulation."
As the officers escorted a stunned Arthur and a pale, trembling Maverick out of the boardroom in front of the entire board, Eleanor stood frozen, tears of pure rage slipping down her face.
Amy turned around, heading toward the exit. Julian walked alongside her.
As they reached the elevators, Julian looked down at Amy, a soft smile finally touching his lips. "Phase one complete."
May you like
Amy looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat. "And what's phase two?"
Julian leaned in slightly, his tone low and intimate. "Phase two is taking back control of everything they tried to steal from you."
