Chapter 2 - Uninvited Guests

The heavy mahogany door of Room 237 remained propped open. The ticking of the ornate grandfather clock in the corridor sounded like a countdown to absolute ruin. Maverick scrambled frantically, trying to button his shirt with hands that refused to cooperate. Penelope sobbed hysterically on the floor, desperately trying to pull her lilac bridesmaid dress back over her head beneath the blanket.

"Amy, you can't do this!" Maverick pleaded, his voice raspy with desperation. "Do you have any idea what this will do to the merger? To my father's heart condition? To our families?"

Amy stood completely still, leaning casually against the doorframe. Her white wedding gown glistened under the warm light of the chandelier, a stark contrast to the absolute darkness settling in her heart.

"You should have thought about your father's heart before you unbuttoned your shirt, Maverick," Amy said, her voice devoid of any warmth. "And as for the merger... well, business has always been about risk management, hasn't it?"

Footsteps echoed sharply down the hallway—heavy, confident, and rapid. The sound of high heels mixed with the firm tread of expensive leather shoes announced the arrival of the Bennett matriarch and her entourage.

Eleanor Bennett, a woman whose stern reputation in the financial world preceded her everywhere she went, turned the corner. Clad in a regal emerald green mother-of-the-groom gown, her silver hair styled in a flawless chignon, she walked with the posture of a monarch. Right behind her was Arthur Bennett, Maverick's formidable father, accompanied by Maverick's older brother, Julian, and several aunts and uncles who had flown in from London.

"Amy, what on earth is going on?" Eleanor demanded, stepping into the suite. "The guests are getting restless, and the wedding coordinator is practically—"

Eleanor's sentence died in her throat.

Her sharp blue eyes swept across the room. She saw her son, half-dressed, looking panicked and guilty. She saw Penelope, the maid of honor, trembling on the floor with her makeup ruined and her dress half-zipped. She saw the discarded tuxedo jacket and the unmade bed.

Arthur Bennett stopped in his tracks, his weathered face flushing a deep, dangerous crimson. Julian Bennett, standing slightly behind his parents, crossed his arms, an unreadable, subtle smirk touching the corner of his lips before he quickly masked it.

"Maverick..." Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling not with sorrow, but with rising, nuclear rage. "What is the meaning of this?"

"Mother, please!" Maverick stammered, raising his hands defensively. "It's a misunderstanding! Penelope was overwhelmed, she came up here feeling faint, and I was just trying to help her—"

"Help her?" Amy interrupted smoothly, turning to face Eleanor. "Mrs. Bennett, when I walked in three minutes ago, your son was helping her out of her dress. If that's standard hospitality in the Bennett household, perhaps I was misinformed about your family values."

"Amy, shut up!" Penelope shrieked from the floor, finally getting her dress pulled up, though her hair remained a chaotic mess. "You don't understand! Maverick loves you! He was just terrified of committing to you! I was just comforting him as a friend!"

"A friend?" Amy turned her gaze toward Penelope. The look was so cold that Penelope instinctively flinched back against the base of the bed. "We've been best friends since we were ten years old, Penelope. I shared my clothes with you. My mother paid for your college tuition when your family lost everything. I made you my maid of honor. And this is how you comfort my groom thirty minutes before I walk down the aisle?"

"Amy..." Penelope choked out, tears overflowing. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."

Arthur Bennett stepped forward, his heavy cane striking the floorboards with a sharp *thud*. "Maverick Vance Bennett! You utter fool! You absolute disgrace!"

"Dad, calm down!" Maverick yelled, his pride suddenly flaring up through his panic. "It's not just my fault! Amy has been cold to me for months! She cares more about her boutique design firm than she does about our relationship! She pushed me away!"

"Is that your excuse?" Julian Bennett spoke up for the first time, his deep, resonant voice filling the room. He stepped past his mother and looked down at his younger brother with utter contempt. "Blaming the woman you betrayed because you couldn't keep your pants pulled up on your own wedding day? That's low, even for you, Maverick."

"Shut up, Julian!" Maverick snarled, glaring at his brother. "You've always wanted to see me fail! You're loving every second of this!"

"Enough!" Eleanor's voice cut through the chaos like a whip. She turned to Amy, her expression shifting from anger to a calculated, desperate pleasantness. "Amy, darling... my child. This is awful. It is abominable. But think clearly. The press is downstairs. The CEO of Vanguard Capital is sitting in the front row. Two hundred of the most influential people in the country are waiting in the garden. We can handle this privately after the ceremony."

Amy let out a soft, melodic laugh that sent chills through everyone present. "Handle it after the ceremony? You expect me to walk down that aisle and say 'I do' to a liar and a betrayer?"

"We can hush this up, Amy," Eleanor urged, stepping closer and taking Amy's gloved hands. "We can give you whatever you want. A larger share in the estate, absolute control over the wedding gifts, complete financial independence. Just walk down the aisle. Save the family's dignity. For your father's memory."

Amy pulled her hands away gently, looking Eleanor dead in the eye. "My father died with his integrity intact, Mrs. Bennett. I won't tarnish his memory by selling mine."

Amy walked over to the bed, picked up her fallen bouquet of white roses, and slowly stripped a handful of delicate petals, letting them flutter to the floor over Maverick's discarded tie.

"The wedding is canceled," Amy declared loudly, her voice ringing clearly across the suite. "And since all two hundred of your distinguished guests are sitting down there right now... I think I owe them an announcement."

May you like

"Amy, no!" Maverick lunged forward to grab her arm, but Julian stepped smoothly into his path, blocking him with a firm arm against his chest.

"Touch her," Julian whispered savagely to his brother, "and I'll ruin you myself."
