Chapter 16 - Checkmate in Millbrook
Before the new wedding could take place, one final piece of business needed to be concluded in upstate New York.
The legal proceedings regarding the liquidation of the old Bennett assets had reached their conclusion. The Millbrook Inn—the scene of the original scandal—had been put up for public bankruptcy auction by the state court.
Amy and Julian sat in the back row of the county courthouse auction room.
"Lot 402," the auctioneer announced loudly. "The Millbrook Inn and surrounding fifty acres of historic property. Starting bid is four million dollars."
Several local real estate developers raised their paddles, pushing the price up to six million, then seven million.
Julian glanced at Amy. "Ready?"
Amy smiled, raising her paddle firmly. "Ten million dollars."
The room went dead silent. Developers turned around to see who had dropped such a massive bid.
"Ten million dollars from the lady in front," the auctioneer called out, stunned. "Going once... going twice... sold to Miss Amy Sterling!"
Later that afternoon, Amy and Julian walked through the silent, sunny gardens of the Millbrook Inn. The white rose arches were still there, blooming vibrantly in the late afternoon sun.
"Why buy the place where it all went wrong, Amy?" Julian asked gently as they walked toward the courtyard where the wedding altar had once stood.
Amy stopped, running her fingers over the soft petals of a white rose. She turned to face him, her face radiant with peace.
"Because it didn't go wrong here, Julian," Amy said softly. "This is the place where I finally woke up. This is the place where I stopped being a naive girl who let people walk over her, and became the woman who took control of her own destiny. And most importantly... this is the place where you stepped into my life."
Julian smiled, pulling her into a warm embrace. "What are your plans for the inn?"

"I'm converting it into the Sterling Foundation Retreat," Amy announced proudly. "A place for young female entrepreneurs to receive mentorship, seed funding, and business protection so they never get taken advantage of by corporate predators."
Julian kissed her forehead tenderly. "That is the most beautiful revenge I've ever heard of."
