Chapter 4 - Echoes of Betrayal

The sleek black Maybach glided smoothly along the winding, tree-lined roads leading away from the Millbrook Inn. Inside the vehicle, the soft leather seats provided a stark contrast to the turbulent storm raging in Amy's chest.

Julian sat across from her, pouring two glasses of sparkling mineral water from the built-in mini fridge. He handed one to her without a word.

Amy took the glass, her hands remaining surprisingly steady. "I suppose you think I'm crazy," she said, looking out the tinted window as the countryside sped by.

"Far from it," Julian replied smoothly, taking a slow sip. "I think you executed the most brilliant tactical execution of public humiliation I've witnessed in my thirty-four years."

Amy turned to look at him. Julian was the dark horse of the Bennett family. Unlike Maverick, who was flashy, spoiled, and constantly seeking validation from their wealthy father, Julian was reclusive, fiercely intelligent, and ran his own independent venture capital firm in Manhattan. He rarely attended family gatherings and had always kept his distance from Maverick's high-society circle.

"Maverick will never recover from this," Amy murmured.

"He shouldn't," Julian said coldly. "He took you for granted, Amy. He assumed that because you were gentle and quiet, you would swallow your pride to protect his family's standing. He miscalculated."

"And what about your mother?" Amy asked. "Eleanor will come after me. The Sterling family design contract was tied to the Bennett holdings."

Julian leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. "My mother is powerful, yes. But she is also terrified of bad press. Right now, every gossip column from New York to Los Angeles is running videos of your speech. Maverick is being labeled the ultimate villain. If Eleanor attacks you publicly, it will destroy what little credibility Bennett Financial has left."

Suddenly, Amy's phone vibrated violently in her lap. The screen lit up with Penelope's contact picture.

Amy stared at the screen for a moment before answering, putting it on speakerphone.

"Amy! Amy, please pick up!" Penelope's hysterical voice filled the quiet back seat of the car. "Where are you? Please, you have to talk to me!"

"I am talking to you, Penelope," Amy said, her tone smooth, level, and entirely cold.

"Amy, I'm so sorry! I'm back at the hotel, and everyone is staring at me! Maverick's father screamed at me and told me I'm banned from all Bennett properties! Maverick won't even look at me now! He says I ruined his life!" Penelope sobbed, breath hitching violently. "You know how much I loved you as a sister! Don't do this to me!"

"You ruined your own life, Penelope," Amy replied calmly. "You took my friendship, my trust, and my home, and you traded it for a cheap thrill in Room 237. Do not ever call me 'sister' again."

"Amy, wait! It wasn't just today!" Penelope blurted out, her panic making her loose-lipped. "Maverick promised me he was going to cancel the wedding months ago! He said he only stayed with you because of your father's trade secrets and the design copyrights!"

Amy's eyes narrowed instantly. She sat up straighter, her eyes locking onto Julian's.

"What trade secrets, Penelope?" Amy asked sharply.

"The... the eco-friendly architectural patents your father left you!" Penelope sobbed out. "Maverick and his father were planning to transfer the intellectual property rights to Bennett Financial right after the marriage papers were signed today! That's why Maverick was so desperate for you to go through with the ceremony!"

A cold realization washed over Amy. Her father's final legacy—a revolutionary green construction patent worth hundreds of millions—had been the true target all along. Maverick had never loved her. It was a corporate conquest disguised as a romance.

Amy looked at Julian, who listened attentively, his expression darkening into pure thunder.

"Thank you for the clarity, Penelope," Amy said coldly into the phone. "Lose my number."

She ended the call and threw the phone onto the leather seat.

"Did you know about this?" Amy asked Julian, her voice dropping into a dangerous register.

Julian shook his head firmly. "I knew my father was desperate to expand into green infrastructure, but I had no idea he was planning to siphon your father's patents. If I had known, Amy, I would have put a stop to this months ago."

Amy took a deep breath, looking out at the city skyline appearing in the distance. "They didn't just want to break my heart, Julian. They wanted to steal my legacy."

Julian reached across the seat and gently placed his hand over hers. His grip was warm, solid, and reassuring.

"Then let's make sure they pay for every single penny," Julian said, his eyes burning with intense determination. "Starting tonight."
