Chapter 14 - The Price of Truth

Two weeks after the dramatic arrests at Teterboro Airport, the dust had finally begun to settle over New York City.

The fallout was absolute. Arthur and Eleanor Bennett were held without bail pending trial on multiple counts of federal wire fraud, grand larceny, corporate espionage, and arson conspiracy. Maverick Bennett, facing secondary charges of embezzlement and obstruction of justice, had taken a plea deal that stripped him of all corporate assets and sentenced him to five years in federal prison.

Penelope Cross had moved out of her Manhattan apartment, seeking a quiet life in the Midwest after completing her cooperation with federal prosecutors.

Amy stood inside the newly renovated executive offices of Sterling Global. The firm had not only survived the scandal, but public sympathy and admire for Amy's fearless resilience had propelled the company to unprecedented heights. Share prices for Sterling Global had tripled in fourteen days.

A knock sounded at her door.

"Come in," Amy said smoothly.

Julian walked in, carrying a large bouquet of fresh, dark red roses—a stark, beautiful contrast to the white wedding roses from Millbrook.

"I thought these might suit your new office better," Julian said with a warm, genuine smile.

Amy smiled, accepting the flowers and breathing in their rich fragrance. "Red roses, Julian? Are you trying to romance your primary business partner?"

"I'm certainly trying," Julian admitted openly, his dark eyes sparkling with uninhibited affection. "How are the final restructuring papers looking?"

Amy pointed to the signed documents on her desk. "Sterling Global and Bennett Capital—now officially rebranded as Vanguard Green Innovations—are officially merged. We hold sixty percent of the market share in sustainable construction across the East Coast."

Julian walked around the desk, stopping right beside her chair. "And what about the formula for the bio-concrete? The physical papers were lost in the fire."

Amy let out a soft, brilliant laugh. She reached into her top desk drawer and pulled out an old, leather-bound notebook.

Julian looked surprised. "What is that?"

"My father's personal diary," Amy explained softly, caressing the worn cover. "He gave it to me on my eighteenth birthday. He always taught me never to put critical innovations in a single safe. The complete chemical sequence was written here all along."

Julian stared at her in sheer wonder before letting out a rich, hearty laugh. "You incredible, brilliant woman. You had the formula the entire time!"

"I needed them to think they had destroyed it," Amy said, looking up into Julian's eyes. "It was the only way to force Eleanor and Maverick to make their final desperate move."

Julian leaned down, placing his hands on the arms of her chair, bringing his face close to hers. "You played the game better than any titan on Wall Street, Amy."

"I had a very good teacher," Amy whispered, her breath catching as Julian's gaze dipped to her lips.

"Amy," Julian said, his tone turning sincere and deep. "The past two weeks have been the most intense, chaotic time of my life. But standing beside you through all of it... it made me realize something."

"What's that?" Amy asked, her heart beating fast.

May you like

"I don't ever want to stand anywhere else," Julian murmured. "Not in business... and not in life."

Julian leaned in and gently pressed his lips against hers. The kiss was slow, warm, and filled with a deep, passionate promise of healing and hope. Amy leaned into his touch, her hands wrapping around his neck as the shadows of betrayal finally vanished completely from her heart.
