Chapter 18: The Final Stand

With the assault team neutralized or retreating into the dark tree line, the heavy silence of the night returned to Raven Lake Lodge, broken only by the crackle of a distant fire and the groan of damaged wood.
Caleb walked into the study, wiping dust from his canvas jacket, followed closely by Frank, who was casually reloading a shotgun shell.
"That was sloppy," Caleb grunted, tossing a captured encrypted comms unit onto the desk. "They weren't local muscle. Those were corporate extraction specialists."
Jack picked up the comms unit, punching a hard reset button to connect directly to the active frequency. "Victor Vance," Jack spoke into the mic, his voice dripping with lethal calm. "Your men are tied up right now. Literally."
A heavy, breathless silence crackled over the secure frequency before Victor’s panicked voice hissed through the speaker. "Carter... how the hell—?"
"You sent your dogs to the wrong house, Victor," Jack interrupted smoothly. "And now, federal marshals are kicking down the doors of your downtown penthouse with a warrant for twenty-year-old homicide charges."
A sharp gasp echoed through the line, followed by the sound of sirens wailing in the background over Victor’s end. "You can't touch me! I have immunity! I have—"
"You have nothing," Ethan stepped forward, leaning close to the mic. His voice was steady, cold, and carried the absolute authority of a man protecting his legacy. "You killed my father. You tried to bury my family. And now, your empire is burning to the ground."

Ethan pressed a button on the console, cutting the transmission permanently.
Outside, the first pale streaks of dawn began to paint the surface of Raven Lake in shades of gold and amber. The red emergency lights inside the lodge clicked off, replaced by the warm glow of the morning sun pouring through the shattered windows.
