Chapter 23: The Unbroken Circle

Back at Raven Lake Lodge, the atmosphere was filled with laughter and warmth. A long wooden dining table was laden with food, home-cooked by Sarah, who was currently arguing good-naturedly with Frank about the proper way to season barbecue brisket.
Jack sat on the back patio overlooking the lake, holding a cold bottle of beer, watching the sun dip below the tree line in a blaze of orange and violet.
Ethan walked out sliding glass doors, holding two fresh drinks. He handed one to Jack and sat down in the Adirondack chair beside him.
"You were incredible today, kid," Jack said, clinking his bottle against Ethan's. "Your father would have been the proudest man on earth."
"I had a good mentor," Ethan replied, smiling softly. "Jack... do you ever look back at the night I found that necklace and think about how easily things could have gone the other way?"
Jack looked out over the dark, peaceful water. "Every day. If you had walked past that chair... if you had handed it to Mike instead of chasing me down the parking lot... we might never have known."
"Maybe the universe has a way of fixing things," Ethan murmured. "Even if it takes twenty years."
Jack nodded slowly, though a faint shadow crossed his eyes—a flicker of heaviness that Ethan didn't quite catch. "Maybe so, Ethan. Just remember... whatever comes next, whatever shadows try to creep back into this valley, you carry the blood of survivors. You're never alone."

Ethan didn't think much of Jack's solemn tone, attributing it to the lingering weight of the past weeks. He smiled, raising his glass toward the fading sunset.
Little did they know, exactly three hundred miles away, a dossier containing classified military secrets from Jack's covert past was being printed on a high-speed laser printer—a dossier designed to shatter the very foundation they had just built.
