Chapter 5: The Architect of Shadows

While Raven Lake Lodge was bathed in the quiet, emotional catharsis of a reunited family, miles away on the industrial outskirts of town, another conversation was taking place under flickering fluorescent lights.
Marcus Vance slammed a heavy porcelain ash-tray down onto a scarred mahogany desk inside a private VIP room of the Ironclad Club. Vance was a man whose wealth was matched only by his cruelty; a ruthless real estate developer who had spent the last decade trying to acquire the waterfront land where Carter's Roadhouse and the surrounding historical district sat. For years, Jack Carter had blocked every single one of Vance's predatory land grabs, treating the old neighborhood as untouchable territory.
"What do you mean he’s distracted?" Vance snarled, glaring at his head of security, a hulking, scarred enforcer named Cole. "Jack Carter doesn't get distracted. He’s a machine built out of asphalt and old grudges!"
Cole crossed his arms, wincing slightly. "We tapped into the comms of his inner circle, boss. One of his guys let it slip. Jack isn't focusing on our zoning bids anymore. He found something—or someone. Some nineteen-year-old kid from a dive bar returned a lost family heirloom to him a few nights ago."
Vance narrowed his eyes, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his thin lips. "An heirloom? A trinket?"
"More than that," Cole warned. "Jack’s moved heaven and earth in the last twenty-four hours. Private investigators, medical couriers, DNA labs. Whatever that kid handed him, it unlocked something massive. Jack looks... happy, boss. And a happy Jack Carter is ten times more dangerous than an angry one."
Vance stood up, smoothing down the lapels of his expensive Italian suit as he walked toward the panoramic window overlooking the city's neon skyline. "If Jack has found a weakness, a new anchor, then that means he is no longer untouchable." He turned back to Cole, his eyes gleaming with malicious intent. "Find out everything about this kid. Who is he? Where does he live? Who is his mother?"

"Already on it," Cole grunted.
"Good," Vance purred, lighting a thick Cuban cigar. "If Jack wants to build a new family after twenty years in the dark, we're going to make sure his new family burns right down to the ground."
