Chapter 24: The Anonymous Package

Three days after the symposium, a heavy drizzle cast a gray, melancholic pall over Raven Lake Lodge. The mail had just arrived, sorted neatly by Daniel on the entryway console.
Among the standard legal notices, foundation grant requests, and fan mail addressed to Ethan, sat a plain, unmarked manila envelope. No return address. No postage stamps. It had been hand-delivered by an unknown courier early that morning.
Ethan picked it up on his way to the kitchen, frowning at the thick, heavy stock. "Daniel, did you screen this?"
Daniel looked up from his dual monitors, his brow furrowing. "Every piece of incoming mail goes through our digital and chemical scanner, Ethan. Why?"
"There's no postmark," Ethan said, turning the envelope over.
Daniel stood up immediately, grabbing a pair of tactical gloves from his desk. "Hand it here. Let me check it."
He carefully sliced the top open with a ceramic blade, extracting a single sheet of heavy black paper and a heavily encrypted flash drive. Printed across the black paper in stark, white silver lettering were twelve words:
“The wolf thinks he protected the cub, but his own sins will destroy them both.”
Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. "What is that?"
Daniel plugged the flash drive into an isolated, air-gapped terminal on his workbench. A single folder popped up on the screen, labeled CARTER_OPERATION_OMEGA.
"Let's find out," Daniel muttered, clicking the folder open.
Within seconds, files began cascading down the screen: classified military deployment logs from twenty-five years ago, heavily redacted black-ops reports from foreign soil, and a financial ledger tracking secret offshore accounts tied directly to Jack Carter's name—accounts that appeared to be actively funneling money to unknown foreign entities.

Ethan stared at the screen, his mind refusing to process what he was seeing. "No... this has to be fake. Vance's people are gone. Who could have put this together?"
Daniel's face went completely pale as he scanned the metadata of the files. "Ethan... these aren't corporate forgeries. These are active Department of Defense intelligence records. Someone with high-level clearance just dropped a nuclear bomb on Jack's entire past."
