Chapter 22: Shadows on the Horizon

While the civic center buzzed with the celebratory energy of Ethan's triumphant speech, miles away in a sterile, windowless corporate office on the industrial side of the state capital, a very different kind of conversation was unfolding.
A sleek, encrypted laptop sat open on a minimalist steel desk. The screen displayed a live, high-definition broadcast of Ethan stepping off the stage amidst the cheering crowd.
A man sat in a high-backed leather chair, his face shrouded in darkness. He wore an expensive bespoke suit, and a heavy gold signet ring flashed under the single overhead light. He watched the screen with cold, calculating detachment.
"The boy is gaining too much momentum," a voice echoed from a secure speakerphone on the desk. "With the entire Vance fortune funneled into his foundation, he's going to start digging into municipal contracts we can't afford to have audited."
The man in the chair took a slow, deliberate sip of bourbon from a crystal tumbler. His voice was low, smooth, and laced with absolute venom.
"Marcus was a fool," the man said softly. "And Victor was arrogant. They thought brute force and corporate intimidation were enough to control a city with deep roots."
"What are your orders, Director?" the voice on the speaker asked. "Do we authorize another tactical extraction?"
"No," the man replied, setting his glass down with a sharp clink. "Bullets and explosions leave forensic trails that attract federal prying eyes. If you want to cut down a tree with deep roots, you don't chop at the branches. You poison the soil."
The man leaned forward, his eyes narrowing as he stared at Jack Carter's face frozen on the live broadcast beside Ethan.

"Find out every secret Jack Carter has buried in the last twenty years," the Director commanded softly. "Every bank account, every confidential informant, every blood oath he swore. If we can't destroy the boy... we'll destroy the man who raised him."
The line clicked dead, leaving the office in absolute silence. A new storm was brewing—far more dangerous, far more sophisticated, and entirely invisible to the family celebrating at Raven Lake.
