Chapter 10 - Bloodline and Bullet Points

The flight back across the Atlantic was aboard Grant Whitaker's private long-range jet. The cabin was quiet, filled with the soft hum of jet engines as the aircraft cut through the blue sky at forty thousand feet.
Mara sat in a luxurious leather armchair, looking through legal drafts prepared by an international team of human rights lawyers. Beside her, Grant was working on his laptop, coordinating financial relief logistics with global humanitarian organizations.
"You don't have to do all this, Grant," Mara said softly, looking over at him. "You’ve already risked your life and reputation for me."
Grant closed his laptop screen and turned to face her, his dark eyes intense yet filled with gentle warmth. "Mara, when I saw you in that ballroom standing up to Dragan with nothing but a silver tray in your hand, I saw someone with more genuine courage than anyone I've ever met in the business world."
He reached out, placing his warm hand gently over hers. "I didn't help you because you're a princess. I helped you because you're Mara—a woman who survived the impossible and kept her soul intact."
Mara felt a blush warm her cheeks, a sweet sensation she hadn't experienced in years. For so long, her heart had been frozen in survival mode, incapable of trusting anyone. But looking into Grant's honest eyes, she realized the wall around her heart had finally crumbled.
"Thank you, Grant," she murmured, gently squeezing his hand in return.
At the front of the cabin, General Vasko approached, holding an encrypted satellite tablet. "Mara, we have just received the formal itinerary from the Karsovan Provisional Council. You are scheduled to land at the capital airport in two hours."
Mara straightened up, her expression turning businesslike. "What is the military situation on the ground?"
"Radomir's loyalist forces have completely surrendered," Vasko reported with satisfaction. "The regular army has aligned with the civilian council. Over eighty high-ranking officers involved in the coup have been arrested. The streets are entirely secure."
He paused, his voice softening slightly. "However... the council is preparing a grand coronation ceremony at the central cathedral for your arrival."
Mara's brows drew together in a frown. "A coronation?"
"They want to restore the monarchy immediately," Vasko explained. "They believe crowning you Queen is the only way to unite the country and prevent further political factionalism."
Mara stood up from her chair, walking down the aisle of the cabin toward the window. She looked down at the vast blue ocean below.
"My father loved his people," Mara said thoughtfully. "But he always said that a true leader serves the nation, rather than letting the nation serve the leader's bloodline."
She turned back to face Vasko and Grant.
"I am not going back to become a Queen sitting on an isolated throne in a marble palace," Mara declared passionately. "That old system failed to prevent the coup because power was concentrated in the hands of too few. If Karsova is to truly heal, it must become a genuine democracy where power belongs to every citizen."

Grant smiled, admiration shining in his eyes. "You're going to decline the crown?"
"I am going to surrender the crown to the people," Mara corrected with a determined grin. "And I am going to make sure that decision is written into our new constitution."
