Chapter 15 - The Price of Silence

Two months later, on a crisp autumn afternoon, the historic city of Boston was bathed in brilliant golden sunlight. At the Aster House Hotel—the very location where eight years of hiding had come to a dramatic end—a special international charity gala was being held.

This time, however, the event was not organized by old political elites or corrupt trade delegations. It was hosted jointly by the Whitaker Foundation and the newly established Vey Humanitarian Trust, dedicated to providing asylum, legal defense, and rehabilitation for political refugees worldwide.

The grand ballroom was decorated exquisitely. Above, the famous crystal chandeliers floated like frozen fireworks, throwing brilliant gold light across polished marble floors, lush floral arrangements, and hundreds of distinguished guests from around the globe.

Mara stood near the grand marble staircase. She did not wear a black service uniform or a starched white apron. She wore a stunning, floor-length midnight-blue gown made of fine silk that complemented her dark hair and glowing complexion. Around her neck, suspended on a delicate platinum chain, rested her mother's silver pendant—the crescent and mountain star now shining as a global symbol of hope and resilience.

Beside her stood Grant, looking exceptionally handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. He held two glasses of fresh sparkling water, handing one to her with a warm, loving smile.

"No champagne trays tonight, Miss Ellis?" Grant teased gently, clinking his glass against hers.

Mara laughed softly, her eyes sparkling with joyful humor. "No trays tonight, Mr. Whitaker. Though I have to admit, my feet hurt less in these heels than they did in those hotel work shoes!"

At that moment, General Vasko approached them, walking with the aid of an elegant wooden cane. He wore a sharp black tuxedo adorned with his military service medals. His face was relaxed, his posture proud, and his eyes completely clear of the grief that had haunted him for years.

"Good evening, Mara, Mr. Whitaker," Vasko greeted warmheartedly.

"Stefan!" Mara said warmly, stepping forward to give the old soldier a gentle hug. "How are you enjoying Boston without security teams chasing us?"

Vasko chuckled, a deep, joyful sound. "It is remarkably pleasant, my dear. Though I must confess, American jazz music is growing on me."

They shared a warm moment together, looking out over the crowded ballroom. Wealthy donors, international diplomats, and former hotel staff members were conversing happily, united in supporting a cause that brought genuine aid to vulnerable people across the world.
