Chapter 16 - The Fires Across the Sea

As the jazz quartet played a light, uplifting melody, Nolan Pierce—the venture capitalist who had mocked Mara during the fateful gala six months earlier—approached their group tentatively. He looked noticeably humbled, holding a glass of mineral water and wearing an apologetic expression.

"Mrs. Vey... Mr. Whitaker," Nolan began awkwardly, clearing his throat. "I... I wanted to personally apologize for my appalling behavior in this room six months ago. I was arrogant, foolish, and completely wrong about you."

Mara looked at Nolan with calm, dignified grace. She held no bitterness or malice toward him; her journey had taught her that harboring anger only burdened the soul.

"Thank you for your apology, Mr. Pierce," Mara replied gently. "Forgiveness is a vital part of moving forward."

Nolan looked visibly relieved. "I've made a five-hundred-thousand-dollar contribution to your refugee fund tonight. It's the least I can do to support your incredible work."

"Your support will help save dozens of families, Nolan," Grant acknowledged, shaking the man's hand firmly. "Thank you."

As Nolan retreated back into the crowd, Grant turned to Mara, leaning down to whisper in her ear. "You handle people with extraordinary grace, my love."

"When you've seen the absolute worst of human nature, Grant," Mara reflected softly, "you learn to appreciate even the smallest efforts toward goodness."
