Chapter 13 - The Diplomatic Chessboard

Over the next six months, Karsova underwent the most radical and peaceful political transformation in Eastern European history. With the royal fortune liquidated into a national trust overseen by international auditors, modern hospitals were built, schools were modernized, and foreign investment flooded into the country.
Grant Whitaker’s technology foundation established its European headquarters in the capital, partnering with the new government to implement advanced medical research facilities and digital infrastructure.
In a quiet, sunlit office inside the newly renovated Supreme Court building, Mara sat behind a simple wooden desk reviewing draft legislation for the upcoming national elections. She wore a stylish white business suit, looking confident, healthy, and deeply content.
A knock sounded on the door, and Grant stepped inside, carrying two paper cups of fresh coffee.
"Delivery for the chief democratic advisor," Grant joked, setting a cup on her desk.
Mara smiled brightly, taking a sip. "Mmm, real Boston coffee! You know how to win my heart, Whitaker."
Grant sat on the edge of her desk, looking down at her with affectionate warmth. "The international election observers just arrived in the capital. They say the voting registration numbers are higher than anywhere else in Europe."
"People want their voices heard," Mara said proudly. "For eight years under Radomir, speaking up meant disappearing into a cellar. Now, people are arguing passionately about economic policies in public cafes. It's beautiful."
Grant hesitated for a moment, pulling a small velvet box from his jacket pocket. Mara’s breath caught in her throat as she looked at the box.
"Grant..." she whispered softly.
Grant looked into her eyes with deep tenderness. "Mara, for the past six months, I've watched you give away a kingdom to save your people. I've watched you turn tragedy into triumph with endless grace."
He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a simple, elegant platinum ring set with a brilliant, sparkling diamond—no royal crests, no complex heraldry, just pure, timeless beauty.
"I don't offer you a palace or a throne," Grant said softly, his voice rich with emotion. "I offer you a life built on absolute equality, shared purpose, and unconditional love. Will you marry me, Mara?"
Tears of pure happiness welled up in Mara's eyes. She stood up from her chair, stepping around the desk, and wrapped her arms tightly around Grant's neck, pulling him into a passionate, deeply emotional kiss.

"Yes!" Mara whispered against his lips, laughing softly through her tears. "Yes, Grant! A thousand times yes!"
Grant slid the platinum ring onto her finger, pulling her close into a warm embrace. Through the window, the soft sounds of the bustling, free city below echoed into the room, marking the beginning of a brand-new chapter in her life.
