Chapter 20 - Light Through Broken Crystal

One year after the dramatic gala at the Aster House Hotel, Mara and Grant sat together on the front porch of their newly built timber-and-glass home in the peaceful hills of Karsova.
The evening sky was a breathtaking canvas of deep indigo, soft purple, and shimmering gold. Below in the valley, the lights of the vibrant, free capital city gleamed warmly like a million tiny stars scattered across the earth.
Mara rested her head comfortably on Grant's shoulder, holding a warm cup of herbal tea. She wore a comfortable knitted sweater, her engagement ring and wedding band catching the warm glow of the setting sun.
Beside them, lying peacefully in a wooden crib on the porch, was their newborn baby daughter—a healthy, beautiful infant girl with soft dark hair and bright, curious eyes.
They had named her Helena.
General Vasko sat in a nearby rocking chair, gently rocking the crib with a contented, peaceful smile on his face. The old soldier had found his ultimate purpose not in fighting wars, but in guarding the laughter of a new generation.
Grant reached over, taking Mara's hand and gently interlacing his fingers with hers. "What are you thinking about, my love?"
Mara looked out at the peaceful valley, then down at her mother's silver pendant resting softly against her chest, and finally at her sleeping baby daughter.
"I was thinking about how long I lived in the dark, Grant," Mara whispered softly, her voice filled with profound gratitude and deep peace. "I spent eight years believing that survival meant disappearing from the world. But you showed me that true survival is having the courage to stand in the light."
Grant leaned down, kissing her forehead tenderly. "You were never just a shadow, Mara. You were always the light."

A gentle mountain breeze stirred the air, rustling the leaves of the pine trees around their home. In the distant city below, church bells chimed softly, marking the arrival of a peaceful, starry night.
Mara closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of her husband's hand, the quiet breathing of her daughter, and the absolute tranquility of a free home. The long nightmare was over. The princess who had once hidden beneath the crystal chandeliers of Boston was finally home, surrounded by love, truth, and a light that would never fade.
