Chapter 15 - The Retaliation

One rainy evening in November, as the outreach center was closing for the night, Graham sat in his ground-floor office reviewing expansion plans for a secondary shelter in Pittsburgh.
Evie sat at the small side desk doing her fifth-grade math homework, humming a cheerful tune.
A soft knock sounded at his office door. Detective Chloe Vance stepped inside, shaking rain off her umbrella.
"Evening, Graham. Hey there, Evie," Chloe greeted warmly.
"Hi Aunt Chloe!" Evie beamed, holding up her math paper. "I got an A on my fractions test!"
"I knew you would, smarty pants," Chloe grinned, tapping Evie's nose before turning to Graham with an official police file.
"What’s up, Chloe?" Graham asked, sensing the serious tone in her eyes.
"Final update from the federal prosecutor's office," Chloe said, placing the document on his desk. "Daniel Rowan pled guilty this morning to nineteen federal counts of grand larceny, fraud, and corporate conspiracy. He was sentenced to thirty-five years without the possibility of parole."
Graham took a deep breath, looking at the official sentencing document. He felt no hatred or anger—only a profound sense of closure.
"And Silas Sterling and Victor Vance?" Graham inquired.
"Sterling got twenty years. Victor Vance’s entire syndicate has been dismantled, and state social services have successfully reunited thirty-two of those rescued kids with verified family members or permanent foster homes. Lily was officially adopted by a loving family in Montgomery County last week."
Evie gasped with delight, clapping her hands. "Lily got a forever family?!"
"She sure did, sweetie," Chloe smiled gently. "And she asked me to give you this."

Chloe pulled a small hand-drawn card from her pocket—a drawing of two little girls holding hands under a rainbow, signed with big colorful letters: *THANK YOU EVIE AND GRAHAM!*
Evie pressed the card against her chest, her eyes sparkling with happy tears.
