Chapter 6 - A Trap Set in Velvet

Graham instantly stood up and stepped directly in front of Evie, shielding her fragile body with his broad shoulders as the three armed operatives closed in.
"Touch her and you die, Sterling," Graham snarled, his voice vibrating with dangerous, predatory force.
Silas laughed coldly, waving the silenced handgun dismissively. "You're in no position to make threats, Vale. You're an ousted CEO hiding in a filth-ridden alley with a homeless orphan. Nobody knows you're here. Nobody will hear the shots."
"Is that what Daniel told you?" Graham said, standing his ground, slowly sliding his hand into his coat pocket. "Did Daniel tell you that I came here alone?"
Silas hesitated for a split second, his eyes flickering nervously toward the dark mouth of the alleyway.
Suddenly, blinding red and blue strobe lights erupted from both ends of the alley. High-pitched police sirens squealed in unison, shattering the night quiet. Four Philadelphia Police cruisers screeched to a halt at the alley entrance, followed by an unmarked black SUV.
"Philadelphia PD! Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads now!" a loud loudspeaker boomed.
Silas cursed violently, dropping his silenced weapon to the pavement as heavily armed officers swarmed the alley, forcing Sterling and his goons to their knees and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto their wrists.
Out of the unmarked black SUV stepped Detective Chloe Vance—a sharp, no-nonsense detective from the Major Crimes Unit and Marcus Vance’s younger sister.
"Nice timing, Detective," Graham said, taking a deep breath and turning to check on Evie, who was trembling behind him.
"Marcus tipped me off ten minutes ago that Sterling’s team was tracking your car," Chloe said, stepping over Silas’s discarded weapon. "Looks like we caught Daniel’s private goons red-handed attempting armed kidnapping."
Graham wrapped his heavy wool overcoat around Evie’s shivering shoulders and lifted her gently into his arms. She clung to his neck, burying her dirt-smudged face into his shoulder.
"Are you alright, little one?" Graham asked softly.
"I thought they were going to take me back," she whimpered.
"Never," Graham said fiercely. "You're safe now. I'm taking you home."
An hour later, inside Detective Chloe Vance’s office at police headquarters, Evie sat wrapped in a warm blanket, drinking hot cocoa while a female child specialist spoke with her gently.
Chloe pulled Graham aside into an interrogation room. "We’ve got enough to hold Sterling and his men on felony assault and weapons charges, Graham. But Daniel Rowan is slick. His lawyers are already filing emergency motions claiming Sterling was acting as an independent contractor without Daniel's knowledge."
"Daniel will throw anyone under the bus to protect himself," Graham said coldly. "What about Evie’s legal status?"
"That's the tricky part," Chloe said gravely. "Technically, Daniel is still her legal guardian of record through probate court. If Daniel’s lawyers figure out we have her, they can file an emergency court order claiming you abducted her."
Graham’s eyes hardened like flint. "Then we need to strike before his lawyers even realize what hit them. We need to expose his entire financial fraud in front of the SEC and the probate judge simultaneously."
"How do you plan to do that?" Chloe asked.
Graham smiled—a grim, brilliant corporate predator's smile. "Tomorrow night is the Annual Vale Meridian Financial Gala at the Kimmel Center. Daniel is hosting three hundred of the city’s top investors and politicians. He’s planning to celebrate the launch of his new overseas fund."

"You're going to crash the gala?" Chloe asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No," Graham replied, looking through the glass at Evie. "Evie and I are going to reclaim what belongs to us.
