Chapter 9 - The Orphanage Scandal

The public downfall of Daniel Rowan sent shockwaves through the global financial markets. Within forty-eight hours, Vale Meridian’s stock plummeted, prompting an immediate intervention by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Federal authorities seized all corporate assets and shell account structures, uncovering an intricate network of institutional corruption.
However, as federal investigators dug deeper into the records of 'Mercy Haven Care'—the shell organization Daniel had used to hide Evie—they stumbled upon a far darker scandal.
Mercy Haven was not just an offshore accounting front; it was part of a larger syndicate operating unregistered private shelters across the Tri-State area. These facilities targeted runaway and orphaned children whose families possessed unclaimed trusts, exploiting their legal identities to launder illicit capital.
Inside Graham's brownstone, Detective Chloe Vance laid out a series of police file folders across the study table.
"It’s bigger than Daniel, Graham," Chloe explained, her face grim. "Daniel was just a client. Mercy Haven is run by a man named Victor Vance—no relation to me, thank God—a dirty former state politician who has been operating in the shadows for over a decade."
Graham’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the mugshot of Victor Vance—a shadowy figure with deep connections in local law enforcement and judiciary boards.
"How many children are currently held in these illegal shelters?" Graham asked.
"We estimate at least forty kids across three hidden sites in Eastern Pennsylvania," Chloe said. "They move them constantly to avoid state inspectors. And with Daniel in federal custody, Victor Vance knows the heat is on. He's preparing to shut down the sites and move those kids out of the country tonight."
Evie, who had been sitting quietly on the window seat listening, stood up and walked over to the table.
"I know where the big house is," she whispered softly.
Graham and Chloe turned to her immediately. Graham crouched down to her level. "Evie... do you know where Victor Vance keeps the main shelter?"
Evie nodded slowly. "Before I ran away, they kept us in an old red brick school near the river in Chester. It had high iron fences and blacked-out windows. There was a little girl named Lily... she was my best friend. She’s still there, Graham."
Graham looked up at Chloe, his decision made instantly. "Assemble your SWAT strike team, Chloe. We’re going to Chester."
"Graham, wait!" Marcus interjected, stepping forward. "You're a civilian now. You can't just breach a heavily guarded syndicate facility!"
"I am not staying behind while forty innocent kids are shipped across the border, Marcus," Graham said with uncompromising authority. "I spent years fighting for paper money while real lives were suffering. Not anymore."
Evie reached out and took Graham’s hand. "Take me with you in the car, Graham. I can show you the back gate where the delivery trucks go."

Graham looked into Evie’s determined eyes and saw the fierce, unbreakable spirit that had saved his life on the sidewalk three months ago.
"Alright, Evie," Graham said gently. "Let’s go save your friends.
