Chapter 7 - Unlikely Allies

The next morning, Graham’s brownstone was a hive of intense activity. Marcus Vance sat at the kitchen island surrounded by encrypted laptops, analyzing financial records provided by Chloe Vance’s precinct connections.
Evie, freshly bathed and dressed in clean, warm clothes—a soft lavender sweater and new blue sneakers—sat at the dining table quietly coloring a picture with a pack of new markers Graham had bought her.
For the first time in months, the heavy, suffocating silence of Graham’s brownstone was replaced by the soft sound of a child's laughter.
"Graham, look at this," Marcus called out, tapping his laptop screen. "We managed to decrypt the secondary ledger from Aegis Vanguard. It proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Daniel forged Julian Rowan's signature three days after Julian’s death to transfer legal guardianship of Evie and control of her eighty-million-dollar trust."
Graham walked over, staring at the digital documents. "Can we prove he knew she was alive while she was on the streets?"
"Yes!" Marcus pointed to a series of monthly payments made from Aegis Vanguard to a fake shelter front called 'Mercy Haven Care'. Daniel was paying fifty thousand dollars a month to keep her hidden in untraceable state-adjacent group homes. But when Evie escaped two years ago, Daniel kept paying the shell company to pocket the money.
Graham shook his head in disgust. "He treated his own niece like a line item on a fraud spreadsheet."
At that moment, the doorbell rang. Marcus reached for his concealed firearm, but Graham checked the security monitor first. Standing on the front porch was an elderly gentleman in a tailored grey suit holding a leather briefcase—Arthur Pendelton, the senior founding partner of Pendelton & Croft, Philadelphia’s most formidable estate law firm, and a longtime personal friend of Graham's late father.
Graham opened the door. "Arthur. I didn't expect to see you here."
Arthur stepped inside, taking off his fedora. He looked around the brownstone before setting his eyes on Graham. "Graham, my boy. I heard about the drama in the alley last night. Chloe Vance called me directly."
"Are you here as my friend, Arthur, or as a lawyer?" Graham asked candidly.
"Both," Arthur said, his voice deep and resonant. "I represented your father when he started his first business, Graham. And I watched you build Vale Meridian. What Daniel Rowan did to you while Elena was on her deathbed was a sin against decency. But what he did to little Evelyn Rowan is a crime against humanity."
Arthur opened his briefcase and pulled out a stack of stamped court petitions. "I have spent all night preparing emergency petitions for the Pennsylvania Orphans' Court. We are filing for the immediate revocation of Daniel Rowan’s guardianship, citing gross financial fraud, child endangerment, and criminal conspiracy. Simultaneously, we are filing for emergency temporary guardianship in your name, Graham."
Graham looked at Arthur, deeply moved. "Will the judge grant it?"
"With the evidence Marcus and Chloe have gathered?" Arthur gave a sharp, confident smile. "Judge Montgomery will sign this warrant before sunset. But we need to serve Daniel publicly to ensure he cannot hide behind his corporate public relations team."

Graham looked over at Evie, who was looking up at them with curious, innocent eyes.
"Tonight at the Kimmel Center Gala," Graham said softly. "The entire financial elite of Pennsylvania will be in that room. Daniel Rowan built his throne on lies. Tonight, we blow the doors off.
