Chapter 4 - Ghosts of Vale Meridian

Locating a single lost nine-year-old child in a sprawling metropolitan city of nearly two million people was an almost impossible task for law enforcement, let alone a private civilian. But Graham Vale was no longer playing by ordinary rules.

He deployed his vast personal capital to hire teams of off-duty private investigators, former federal agents, and street-level outreach workers. They combed through homeless shelters, soup kitchens, abandoned subway tunnels, and industrial alleyways across North and West Philadelphia.

While his search teams operated in the physical shadows of the city, Graham initiated a covert financial war against Daniel Rowan. Operating through an encrypted, anonymous hedge fund named *Elena Capital*, Graham began aggressively shorting Vale Meridian's stock on the public market, targeting subtle financial vulnerabilities he knew Daniel couldn't conceal forever.

On a chilly Thursday morning, inside the executive corner office on the forty-second floor of the Vale Meridian Tower, Daniel Rowan sat behind his polished mahogany desk. The office was immaculate, but Daniel looked visibly frayed. Dark circles shadowed his bloodshot eyes, and his hands twitched nervously as he stared at his terminal screen.

A sharp chime sounded on his private encrypted phone line. Daniel snatched up the receiver. "What is it?"

"Mr. Rowan, we have a major emergency," his chief financial officer reported, his voice shaky with panic. "An aggressive short-seller operating under the name Elena Capital has just acquired four percent of our high-yield debt notes. They are officially requesting an immediate third-party forensic audit of our offshore reserve accounts."

Daniel’s blood ran cold. "Elena Capital? Who is behind that fund?"

"We can't breach the legal wall. It's a protected trust registered in Delaware. But sir... the name. Could it be Graham Vale?"

"Graham is broken!" Daniel shouted, slamming his fist onto the desk so hard his coffee mug rattled. "He's living like a hermit in Rittenhouse! He sold his penthouse! He's running some pathetic charity soup kitchen in memory of his dead wife! He doesn't have the financial leverage or the sanity to launch an attack like this!"

"Sir, whoever is running Elena Capital has access to internal ledger serial numbers from six years ago. They possess detailed records regarding Aegis Vanguard Holdings."

Daniel stood up abruptly, walking nervously to the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the grey skyline. His mind raced back to his deceased brother Julian, to the forged trust agreements, and to the little girl who had vanished from state custody two years ago.

"Find out who is funding Elena Capital," Daniel ordered into the receiver, his voice trembling with anger. "And get in touch with Silas Sterling at Starlight Security. Tell him to double the search radius around the Kensington shelter districts. If that brat is found on the streets, she needs to be taken out of state immediately!"

Meanwhile, three miles away in a noisy community shelter in Kensington, Graham Vale stood inside a crowded cafeteria, holding a laminated portrait sketch of Evie.

An elderly shelter volunteer named Martha put on her reading glasses and examined the sketch carefully. "I know this child, Mr. Vale. She doesn't come inside for hot food often—she's terrified of large adult crowds. But she spends her nights near the steam exhaust vents behind St. Jude’s Chapel on 8th Street."

Graham felt a surge of electricity course through his veins. "Is she alone?"

"Usually, yes," Martha nodded sadly. "Sometimes an older teenager watches out for her, but she keeps to herself. She’s remarkably sharp, though. Collects old books from recycling bins. Always carries a blue permanent marker in her coat pocket."

"A blue marker," Graham repeated, his voice choked with emotion.

"Yes," Martha nodded. "Writes encouraging little notes on scrap paper and leaves them for people who look sad or broken. People around here call her the 'Corner Angel'."

Graham didn't lose another second. He thanked Martha warmly, rushed out to his car, and drove straight toward St. Jude’s Chapel as dusk began to fall across the city.
