Chapter 10 - The Midpoint Trap

The ballroom had gone deathly quiet. Dozens of high-society guests pretended to sip their champagne while straining their ears to catch every word of the confrontation. Richard yanked his wrist back the second Adrian released him, massaging his bruised arm while glaring with venomous hatred.

"You think you've won everything, don't you?" Celeste sneered, stepping up beside her brother, her voice dripping with venom. She forced a brittle, malicious smile back onto her face. "You found a few old bank records. You staged a boardroom coup with borrowed money. But you don't know the first thing about how deep the rot goes in this city, Victoria. The police, the D.A., the zoning commission—they're all on our payroll."

"Are they?" a smooth, amused voice echoed from the top of the grand marble staircase.

Every head in the room turned upward. Descending the steps with slow, deliberate grace was Marcus Vance, the newly appointed Federal District Attorney, flanked by two armed federal agents in dark suits.

Celeste's face turned completely white. Richard staggered backward, bumping into a small cocktail table that sent crystal glasses crashing to the floor.

"Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Halden," District Attorney Vance announced, his voice booming effortlessly across the cavernous ballroom. He reached the bottom of the stairs and walked straight toward us, stopping directly in front of Adrian and me. He nodded respectfully to Adrian before turning his gaze to Celeste and Richard.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion, Marcus?" Celeste stammered, her voice shaking violently despite her desperate attempt to maintain composure. "We invited you to dinner last week! We are friends!"

"We were acquaintances, Celeste, until forty-five minutes ago when Mr. Cross's legal team delivered an unredacted forensic audio recording and bank transfer logs proving corporate embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and vehicular homicide conspiracy regarding the late Arthur Halden," Vance stated coldly, pulling a pair of shiny steel handcuffs from his coat pocket.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Cameras flashed incessantly as reporters near the doors pushed past security to capture every second.

"You're arresting Richard and Celeste Halden on charges of federal fraud and conspiracy," Vance continued, signaling the federal agents forward. "And as for Victor Shaw, his assets have been frozen nationwide as of ten minutes ago."

Richard lunged toward a side exit, but federal agents intercepted him instantly, slamming him against the mahogany wall and clicking the handcuffs onto his wrists. Celeste shrieked as another agent gripped her arms, her designer gown dragging through spilled champagne on the marble floor.

As they were dragged past us toward the grand exit, Celeste locked eyes with me one last time, her expression twisted in pure, unadulterated hatred. "You'll never be safe, Victoria! The people we worked with... they'll hunt you down until the day you die!"

I didn't flinch. I stood tall beside Adrian, watching them vanish out the doors. As the flashing lights of police cruisers illuminated the windows outside, Adrian turned to me, his dark eyes softening into something warm and fiercely protective.

"It's finally over," I murmured softly, resting his hand gently on the small of my back.

"No, Adrian," I whispered, looking up into his eyes, feeling the electric thrill of a new dawn. "It's only just beginning."
