Chapter 15 - The Chancellor's Gala

The Chancellor's Charity Gala at the Grand Plaza Hotel was the pinnacle of the social season. Hundreds of billionaires, politicians, and industry titans mingled beneath towering crystal chandeliers, sipping vintage champagne and exchanging polite, venomous smiles.

When Adrian and I walked through the arched mahogany doors, all conversation in the grand ballroom seemed to stall. I wore a custom-designed, backless midnight-blue velvet gown encrusted with subtle crystal beading that caught every flicker of light. Adrian wore a classic bespoke tuxedo, his arm securely around my waist, projecting an aura of untouchable power.

Across the crowded room, standing near the VIP terrace doors, was a tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties with cold, patrician features and eyes like polished steel. Kaelen Vance.

He held a flute of champagne, watching us with an expression of mild, amused curiosity, as if we were two mice wandering willingly into a snake pit.

"He's watching us," I murmured, keeping my smile fixed for the cameras flashing near the entrance.

"Let them watch," Adrian replied smoothly, guiding me toward the center of the room. "Predators love arrogance. It makes them blind to the trap closing around their throat."

As we approached the bar, a tall, impeccably dressed man stepped out from the crowd, blocking our path. It was Kaelen Vance himself. Up close, his presence radiated a chilling, effortless menace—a man who had ordered executions the way other men ordered coffee.

"Mr. Cross. And Ms. Halden," Kaelen greeted us, his voice rich, cultured, and dripping with thinly veiled condescension. He raised his champagne flute in a mocking toast. "An impressive resurrection, Ms. Halden. Most girls in your position would have stayed hidden after a late-night escape in the rain."

"Most girls don't inherit a multi-billion-dollar empire, Mr. Vance," I replied instantly, my voice ringing clear and steady as I looked him dead in the eye. "And they certainly don't have partners who buy out Swiss syndicates before breakfast."

Kaelen's polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second—just enough for me to know our counter-strike had hit its mark. He narrowed his eyes, leaning in slightly. "You think because you seized a few shell companies, you've won a seat at our table, Victoria? The Sterling Syndicate isn't a board of directors you can outvote. We are the foundation of this city. And foundations can always be... excavated."

Before Kaelen could finish his threat, the massive crystal chandeliers above the ballroom suddenly flickered twice and plunged into absolute darkness.
