Chapter 3 - Blood on the Ledger

At 3:00 AM, the penthouse was dead silent. I sat on the edge of the guest suite bed, staring at the glowing screen of my encrypted tablet. The dead man's switch was still active. Seven hours remaining until automatic release.
A soft knock sounded at the door before it swung open. Adrian stood in the doorway, wearing a black silk shirt with the top buttons unfastened, looking every bit the ruthless corporate titan.
"You're not sleeping," he observed, stepping into the room.
"I can't," I said honestly, looking up at him. "Every time I close my eyes, I see Victor Shaw's hand around my wrist, and I hear Celeste laughing like she owns my soul."
Adrian walked over, sitting down beside me on the mattress. The bed dipped under his weight, and the proximity sent a sudden, unexpected jolt through my nervous system. He reached out, his long fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my cheek.
"Fear is a useful tool, Victoria, but only if you harness it," Adrian murmured, his voice dropping an octave, becoming dangerously intimate. "Let it make you cold. Let it make you calculating."
"Did you ever lose someone?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "Is that why you hate them as much as I do?"
Adrian's hand paused on my cheek. His dark eyes flickered with a sudden, dark shadow—a glimpse into a past he kept locked behind impenetrable walls. "Seven years ago, Victor Shaw and a consortium of predatory investors orchestrated a hostile takeover of my family's shipping enterprise. My father put a gun to his head in his own office when he lost everything. I swore then and there that I would strip every single one of them of every cent, every title, and every breath of power they held."
I caught my breath. We weren't just two allies thrown together by circumstance; we were two ghosts bound by vengeance, sharing the same graveyard.
"Then let's destroy them," I whispered fiercely, pressing my cheek slightly against his palm.
Adrian's gaze locked onto my lips. For a fleeting second, the ruthless billionaire dissolved into a man consumed by the same electric hunger that burned inside me. His thumb brushed my lower lip. "Tomorrow morning, when we walk through those boardroom doors, Celeste will try to humiliate you. She will try to make you feel small. When she does, look her dead in the eye, smile, and hand her this."
He reached into his pocket and placed a small, polished silver flash drive onto the nightstand. "What's on this?"
May you like
"Everything," Adrian whispered, his face inches from mine. "The unredacted bank records, the offshore wire receipts signed by your uncle, and proof that Victor Shaw's investment firm is currently insolvent. Checkmate before the game even begins."
The weight of the flash drive on the wooden nightstand felt heavier than steel. I picked it up, feeling the cool metal ridges against my bandaged palm. The clock on the wall ticked silently toward dawn. In less than six hours, the house of cards Celeste and Victor had built upon my father's grave would come crashing down.
