Chapter 18 - Shadows on the Horizon

Three weeks after the corporate merger celebration, the autumn leaves began to turn amber and gold across the private estate grounds of Halden Manor, which Adrian and I had fully restored to its former glory. We hosted a private dinner on the stone patio overlooking the ocean, celebrating our first month as official co-owners of Cross-Halden Global.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in violent shades of crimson and violet, I stood by the stone balustrade, sipping a glass of reserve pinot noir. The ocean waves crashed rhythmically against the jagged rocks far below, echoing the memory of the night my father's car had gone off the coastal cliff.
Adrian walked up behind me, draped a cashmere shawl gently over my shoulders, and rested his hands on my arms. "You're miles away tonight, Victoria. What are you thinking about?"
I leaned back against his solid chest, turning my head to look up at him. "I was thinking about how easily all of this could have gone the other way. If you hadn't driven down that road that night... if I hadn't jumped in front of your car... I'd either be Victor Shaw's prisoner or six feet under the ocean."
Adrian's grip tightened slightly around my shoulders, his expression turning solemn. "Fate doesn't deal in coincidences, Victoria. You were meant to survive that night because you were meant to destroy them. Never forget the fire it took to get you here."
"I won't," I whispered, turning around in his embrace and wrapping my arms around his neck. "But sometimes... when things are this quiet... I wonder if the Sterling Syndicate really had only one head."
Adrian's dark eyes narrowed slightly at my words. Before he could answer, his secure satellite phone buzzed sharply in his pocket. He pulled it out, glancing at the encrypted display. His expression hardened into a mask of pure steel.
"What is it?" I asked, stepping back slightly.
"An alert from our Swiss clearinghouse," Adrian said, his voice dangerously low. "A dormant trust account in Zurich—one we thought was completely frozen when Kaelen Vance was sentenced—just transferred fifty million dollars to a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.\%

My blood ran cold. "Under whose name?"
Adrian looked up from the screen, his dark eyes locking onto mine with grim intensity. "A name we haven't heard yet... but one connected directly to your father's original unredacted files."
