Chapter 19 - The Zurich Account

The private jet climbing through the midnight clouds toward Geneva was dead silent. Inside the luxurious cabin, Adrian and I sat across from each other surrounded by encrypted terminals, satellite feeds, and forensic audit binders.
I traced my finger over the printed financial transfer log. Fifty million dollars. Moving from a frozen Swiss trust directly into an opaque holding entity named <i>'Aegis Prime'</i>—a name that appeared in my late father's handwritten journal next to a cryptic warning: <i>'If Aegis Prime activates, the syndicate isn't dead. It's evolving.'</i>
"Whoever is behind Aegis Prime knew Kaelen Vance would fall," I said, looking up at Adrian across the mahogany table. "They used Kaelen as a decoy to take the federal blow while they quietly transferred their remaining capital offshore."
"And now they think they're safe behind Swiss banking secrecy laws," Adrian replied calmly, tapping a key on his terminal. A secure holographic map of Geneva lit up the cabin cabin table. "Fortunately, when I acquired the majority of Europe's distressed debt portfolios last year, I also acquired a controlling stake in the private security firm that guards the Zurich data vaults."
"You didn't just buy companies, Adrian," I said with a faint, admiring smile. "You bought the entire chessboard."
"In finance, Victoria, you never leave a piece on the board that can be used against you," he replied, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table and locking eyes with me. "When we land in Geneva in three hours, we aren't meeting with a banker. We're meeting the shadow architect who designed the entire Sterling Syndicate network—the person your father trusted before he realized the truth."

My heart skipped a beat. "Who? Who could my father have trusted that deep?"
"Arthur Halden's former mentor and co-founder of the original Halden Group," Adrian said softly, his voice dropping an octave. "A man the world believes died in a plane crash twenty years ago... but who has been pulling the strings from the shadows all along."
