Chapter 14 - The Sterling Syndicate

Back inside the bulletproof sanctuary of Cross Tower, Victor Shaw's confession played on a looped digital recording in Adrian's private war room. The words <i>'Sterling Syndicate'</i> hovered on the multi-screen display like a dark, creeping plague.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wrapping my arms around myself as the rain once again began to streak across the glass. The city below looked peaceful, ignorant of the invisible war being fought in its boardrooms and dark alleys.

"The Sterling Syndicate," I repeated quietly. "My father spent six months trying to trace their shell companies before he died. He thought they were just money launderers for international arms dealers. He had no idea they owned half of our corporate boardrooms."

"They don't just own boardrooms, Victoria; they own governments, regulatory agencies, and federal judges," Adrian said, walking up behind me and placing a warm, heavy hand on my shoulder. "For the past decade, they've used companies like Halden Group as front operations to funnel capital across international borders. When your father threatened to expose their primary conduit, they didn't hesitate to eliminate him."

"And now they're coming after me because I dismantled their front operation and took control of the company," I said, turning around to face him. My voice didn't shake. The fear I had felt weeks ago had been forged into something harder, unbreakable. "So what do we do, Adrian? Do we hide behind federal protection? Do we wait for Kaelen Vance to send another encrypted threat?"

A slow, dangerous smile curved Adrian's lips—the smile of a man who didn't know the meaning of defeat. "Hide? Victoria, I didn't spend ten years building Cross Meridian Capital to play defense against a shadow syndicate."

He walked over to his main console and tapped a sequence of keys. A massive corporate flowchart materialized across three giant monitors, mapping out subsidiary shell companies, dummy accounts, and high-level executives spanning New York, Geneva, and Singapore.

"Kaelen Vance thinks he's hunting us," Adrian continued, pointing to a highlighted node on the network map. "He doesn't realize we've already infiltrated his primary Swiss holding account. As of two hours ago, my offshore assets have quietly bought up fifty-one percent of the Syndicate's primary liquidity reserve through an anonymous Cayman trust."

My eyes widened. "You staged a counter-takeover against a global criminal syndicate?"

"Rule number one of high-stakes finance, Victoria," Adrian said, stepping close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his chest, his dark eyes locking onto mine with intoxicating intensity. "Never fight a monster on its own terms. Buy the monster, fire the board, and take ownership of its cage. And tomorrow night, at the annual Chancellor's Charity Gala where Kaelen Vance is scheduled to appear as a guest of honor... we're going to introduce ourselves."
