Chapter 5 - The Grand Entrance

The oak double doors of the Halden Group boardroom on the 40th floor were closed, but through the heavy wood, I could hear the murmur of executives discussing quarterly losses. I stood in the private elevator lobby, my head held high, my heels clicking against the marble floor with absolute authority.
Beside me, Adrian adjusted the cuffs of his suit jacket, looking utterly relaxed. As the elevator chimes signaled our arrival, the heavy doors slid open, revealing the panoramic boardroom table where Celeste Halden sat at the head, flanked by Victor Shaw and corporate counsel.
Celeste looked up, her expression a mix of triumphant condescension and sudden, jarring confusion. She had expected me to be cowering in a motel room somewhere, nursing my cuts and nursing my terror. Instead, I walked in on the arm of the most feared financial predator in the country.
"Victoria," Celeste said sharply, standing up from her leather chair, her voice ringing across the silent room. "Where on earth have you been? We have been searching for you all night. And what is the meaning of—"
"Good morning, Celeste," I interrupted, my voice crystal clear and devoid of any tremor. I glided toward the head of the table, releasing Adrian's arm and resting my palms flat on the polished mahogany surface. "I apologize for missing the family dinner. I was busy reviewing your resignation papers."
Silence fell over the room so heavy you could hear the air conditioning humming. Victor Shaw sneered, leaning back in his chair. "Listen here, little girl. You seem confused. Your stepmother runs this board, and your shares are already committed to—"
"My shares belong to me, Mr. Shaw," I cut him off, turning my gaze slowly toward him with a chilling smile. "And as of 8:00 AM this morning, according to Section 4 of the Halden corporate bylaws, possessing eighteen percent voting stock gives me the legal authority to call an immediate emergency vote of no confidence against the current CEO."
Celeste's face drained of all color, her hands gripping the edge of the table until her knuckles turned ghostly white. "You... you wouldn't dare. You don't have the backing!"
May you like
"Oh, but she does," Adrian spoke up for the first time, stepping forward and tossing the silver flash drive onto the center of the table. "Cross Meridian Capital now controls sixty-five percent of Halden Group's debt, along with every single promissory note your dear brother Richard forged in the Caymans. Meeting adjourned, Celeste. You're fired."
The boardroom erupted into instantaneous chaos. Two senior board members who had been in Celeste's pocket for a decade stood up, shouting objections, while corporate counsel frantically flipped through legal binders trying to find a loophole. Celeste shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me. But it was already over. The trap had snapped shut.
