Chapter 11 - THE ROOFTOP ENCOUNTER

The St. Regis rooftop lounge was bathed in amber mood lighting, overlooking the glittering skyline of the city. Patrons in designer evening wear sipped martinis, completely unaware of the high-stakes corporate warfare playing out in the corner booth.
I arrived precisely at eight, wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit that signaled business rather than vulnerability. My hair was pulled back into a sleek ponytail, and my posture was unyielding.
Nathan Sterling sat at the corner table, nursing a glass of scotch. He didn't look like a vengeful corporate raider; he looked like a Wall Street executive in his early thirties, with piercing gray eyes, a tailored navy suit, and an aura of absolute, unshakeable confidence.
As I approached, he stood up, gesturing politely to the empty seat opposite him. "Elena Vance. Thank you for coming."
"Cut the pleasantries, Nathan," I said, sliding into the seat without taking off my coat. "You hold the debt covenant. You want the estate. State your terms."
Nathan smiled faintly, sitting back down and swirling his scotch. "Direct. I like that. Much sharper than your ex-husband, or your cousin Beatrice, who incidentally tried to sell me your blueprints this afternoon."
I didn't flinch. "Beatrice is desperate. Her information is worthless."
"Not entirely," Nathan replied, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. "She confirmed what my investigators suspected: you didn't inherit this estate through passive luck. You fought for it. You dismantled Daniel in forty-eight hours and put Julian away before dessert."
"And now you think you can do the same to me," I said, meeting his gaze head-on.
"I don't think, Lena—I know," Nathan said smoothly. "Legally, your trust is over-leveraged by twelve million dollars in back bonds tied to your grandfather’s old conglomerate. Under section four of the debt covenant, I can foreclose by sunrise."
"Unless..." I prompted, raising an eyebrow.
"Unless we form an alliance," Nathan said, surprising me completely.
I stared at him. "An alliance? You spent a decade plotting my family’s financial ruin, and now you want to partner with me?"
"Business is business, Lena," Nathan said calmly. "My grandfather wanted vengeance; I want market dominance. Ridgecrest Estates is the crown jewel of the eastern seaboard residential market. If we merge our assets—your historical land title and my corporate capital—we control eighty percent of the luxury real estate trust sector."

"And what happens to me?" I asked suspiciously. "Do I become your quiet little wife, just like Daniel wanted?"
Nathan let out a short, genuine laugh. "Good god, no. If I wanted a fragile ornament, I wouldn't have invited the woman who survived a boiling soup assault and turned it into an eviction empire. I want a partner who can match me cutthroat for cutthroat."
