Chapter 6 - THE RETURN OF THE EX-PARTNER

Three days after the eviction, I received an unexpected visitor at the front gates. The estate security cameras flashed, showing a sleek black Bentley idling outside the wrought-iron perimeter.

I pressed the intercom button. "State your business."

The window rolled down, revealing a face I hadn't seen in four years. Julian Vance—no relation, despite the shared surname—stared up into the camera lens with a sharp, calculating smile.

"Hello, Lena. It’s been a long time. Open the gate; we need to talk business."

Julian was my former university fiancé, a brilliant corporate acquisitions lawyer who had walked out of my life when my grandfather’s health failed and my family trust faced its first wave of hostile litigation. At the time, he claimed I was too burdened by family debt. Now, seeing the sprawling estate behind me on his corporate radar, he had crawled back out of the woodwork.

I buzzed the gate open, watching the Bentley glide up the driveway and park neatly by the fountain.

When Julian stepped out, dressed in an immaculate bespoke Brioni suit, he looked every bit the high-powered predator he had always been. He opened his arms with a charming, practiced smile.

"Lena, my god. You look stunning. Rumor has it you just dismantled Daniel Montgomery’s entire existence in forty-eight hours. I always knew you had teeth under that quiet exterior."

"Cut the charm, Julian," I said, standing on the front porch with my arms crossed. "You didn't drive out here to admire my landscaping. Why are you at my gate?"

Julian chuckled, stepping closer up the marble steps. "Word travels fast in legal circles. I represent a consortium of private equity investors who are very interested in the commercial development rights surrounding Ridgecrest Estates. Now that you hold sole title free and clear of marital encumbrances, you’re sitting on twenty million dollars of prime real estate."

"And you want a cut of the commission," I finished flatly.

"I want a partnership," Julian corrected smoothly, stepping closer. "Old times, Lena. We used to make an incredible team. Daniel was a parasite who didn't appreciate your intellect. I do. Let me handle your portfolio, and we can turn this estate into a multi-million-dollar corporate trust."

I looked at him for a long moment, remembering how he had abandoned me when things got difficult. A cold, calculating thrill sparked in my chest. Julian thought he could manipulate me just like Daniel had, purely because I was a woman alone in a big house.

"Let's have dinner tonight, Julian," I said softly, a faint smile touching my lips. "Inside the formal dining room. Seven sharp."

Julian’s eyes gleamed with triumphant greed. "Seven sharp, Lena. I'll bring the champagne."
