Chapter 7 - THE DINNER OF SHADOWS

The formal dining room was lit by dozens of flickering candelabras, casting long, dramatic shadows across the mahogany paneling. I wore a backless midnight-blue silk gown that commanded the room, my bandaged hand covered discreetly by a delicate lace glove.

Julian sat at the opposite end of the table, nursing a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon. He looked around the room with undisguised hunger, imagining himself owning every square inch of it.

"You've truly outdone yourself, Lena," Julian said, raising his glass in a toast. "To brilliant minds and profitable reunions."

I raised my glass back, my expression neutral. "To reunions, Julian. Tell me, how is your firm doing? I heard you lost your senior partnership account last month."

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he recovered with a smooth laugh. "Corporate restructuring, nothing more. But with your estate assets backing my new venture, my firm will bounce back ten times stronger."

"And my conditions?" I asked, leaning forward slightly.

"Name them. Anything you want—trust control, asset allocation, legal immunity," Julian said eagerly, leaning across the table as if sealing a grand bargain.

I smiled, setting my glass down with a crisp, echoing clink. "I want your signature on a personal liability waiver."

Julian blinked, surprised. "A liability waiver? For what?"

"For acting as an unauthorized financial agent attempting to manipulate trust property without a magistrate’s clearance," I said smoothly.

Before Julian could process my words, the heavy dining room doors swung open. Three men in dark suits marched into the room, led not by sheriff deputies, but by federal securities investigators.

Julian leaped to his feet, knocking his chair over with a loud crash. "What is this?! Lena, what is the meaning of this?!"

"Federal wire fraud and insider trading investigations take about six months to build, Julian," I said, standing up gracefully from my seat and walking toward the head of the table. "You thought you were sniffing around my estate for real estate development? My legal team tipped off the SEC regarding your firm’s shady offshore accounts three weeks ago."

Julian’s face turned the color of ash. He stared at me in absolute horror. "You... you set me up. This wasn't a dinner date; it was a sting."

"You abandoned me when my family needed strength, Julian," I whispered, my voice cold as ice. "Never mistake my patience for stupidity."

The federal agents slapped cold steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists, reading him his Miranda rights as he stumbled backward against the mahogany table. As they dragged him out through the grand double doors, I poured myself another glass of champagne and toasted the empty room.
