Chapter 9 - THE HIDDEN COMPARTMENT

I didn't waste time. I walked straight into my grandfather’s old private study on the third floor—a room Daniel and Evelyn had never been allowed to enter because I kept it locked.

The room smelled of old leather, pipe tobacco, and aged paper. I walked over to the massive mahogany executive desk, running my fingers along the intricate hand-carved molding. Beatrice’s words echoed in my mind: *behind the false mahogany panel.*

I pressed my fingers against the bottom left drawer slide. With a soft click, a concealed spring released, and a secret wooden panel slid open on the side of the desk, revealing a weathered leather-bound journal and a heavy brass key.

My hands trembled slightly as I pulled the journal out. The first page was dated forty years ago, written in my grandfather’s sharp, precise handwriting.

I carried it to the leather armchair by the fireplace, turned on the reading lamp, and began to read.

*“If anyone is reading this, it means the estate has passed to Lena. I pray she never has to uncover the rot that built this foundation...”*

My breath hitched. The journal detailed a dark chapter of family history—not embezzlement, but a wrongful corporate takeover orchestrated by my grandfather’s former business partner, a man named Richard Sterling. Sterling had been framed for corporate fraud, forced out of the company, and his entire family ruined so my grandfather could seize sole ownership of Ridgecrest Estates.

Worse still, the journal revealed that Richard Sterling had a surviving grandson—a man who had spent the last decade quietly buying up our corporate debt, waiting for the exact moment to legally dismantle the Vance family empire from the inside out.

And according to the financial transfer records clipped to the back of the journal, that grandson had just acquired controlling interest in my trust’s primary debt holder yesterday.

My phone rang violently on the desk.

I picked it up. An unknown caller ID flashed on the screen. I swiped to answer.

"Hello, Lena," a deep, calm, unfamiliar voice spoke on the other end of the line. "Did you enjoy reading your grandfather’s diary?"
