Chapter 17 - THE FINAL ARREST

Within ten minutes, county sheriff deputies arrived at the gates, flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the glass conservatory windows. They cuffed Evelyn as she screamed curses into the night air, dragging her away from the estate grounds for the very last time.
I stood on the front porch, watching the squad car tail-lights disappear down the long gravel driveway.
Nathan walked up beside me, handing me a fresh cup of tea. "Well, that certainly adds excitement to quarterly audits."
I took the cup, blowing softly across the steaming surface. "She never understood that this house wasn't about status or power. It was about legacy. She treated everything like a stage play where she played the queen, and everyone else were props."
"And you were the quiet wife expected to take the burns in silence," Nathan added quietly.
"Not anymore," I murmured, taking a sip of the tea.
