Chapter 10 - The Lion's Den

The Grand Plaza Hotel ballroom was a spectacle of crystal chandeliers, silk draperies, and champagne flutes. Over five hundred of the county's wealthiest investors, politicians, and socialites chatted amidst the soft melodies of a string quartet.

At the center of the VIP table sat Vance Sterling, impeccably dressed in a tailored tuxedo, sipping vintage scotch while his private security guards flanked the perimeter with concealed firearms.

"Ladies and gentlemen," announced Council President Davies from the podium. "Tonight, we honor a man whose vision is reshaping the future of Oakridge. Please welcome our Civic Leader of the Year, Mr. Vance Sterling!"

Polite applause rippled through the room as Vance stepped up to the gold-plated microphone, flashing a polished, practiced smile.

"Thank you, friends," Vance began smoothly. "Progress requires sacrifice. Old, decaying buildings must make way for modern enterprise. Tonight, I am proud to announce that the historic Station Four district will soon become the Sterling Innovation Towers—"

*BANG!*

The massive double doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open.

Every head turned.

Walking down the center aisle in precise, unified formation came Captain Daniel Brooks in full dress uniform, Mayor Helen Whitaker, Fire Marshal Sarah Lin, and twenty uniformed firefighters. Walking directly at the head of the formation was eighteen-year-old Mason Reed, wearing the gold-buttoned Paramedic Corps uniform, holding a digital tablet connected to the ballroom's main audiovisual system.

Vance Sterling's smile vanished. "What is the meaning of this disruption? Security, remove these trespassers!"

"Nobody moves!" Federal Marshal Jackson called out, flanking the stage with four armed federal agents. "Federal warrant. Stand down!"

Mason stepped up to the podium, looking Vance dead in the eye.

"Fourteen years ago, Mr. Sterling, you thought you silenced a hero in a hospital parking lot," Mason spoke clearly into the microphone, his voice echoing through every speaker in the grand room. "You were wrong."

Mason tapped the tablet. Instantly, the giant projector screens surrounding the ballroom illuminated with Elliot Reed's signed logs, chemical manifests, bank transfer receipts, and the chilling audio recording of Elliot's final testimony.

The ballroom exploded into gasps of horror and outrage. Investors recoiled from the stage. Cameras from local news stations flashed relentlessly, broadcasting the evidence live to thousands of viewers across the state.

Vance's face turned a sickening shade of grey. "This is fabricated! It's slander!"

"The chemicals you dumped on Highway 26 poisoned thirty-four first responders, Vance," Daniel Brooks stepped forward, his voice thundering with authority. "And last night, your hired thugs set fire to Claire Reed's home. We have the driver in custody. He already confessed that you signed the check."

Vance lunged toward the side exit, but Daniel intercepted him with a powerful grab, forcing the billionaire onto the carpet as Federal Marshals snapped steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

The room erupted into deafening applause and cheers.

Mason looked up at the ceiling, feeling a profound sense of warmth wash over his soul. *We did it, Dad,* he thought. *The truth is finally out.*
