Chapter 23 - The Race Against Dawn

The air inside the sealed archive vault was rapidly cooling, and with no cellular reception three stories underground, panic would have claimed ordinary people.
"We have about three hours of breathable air in this sealed unit," Maya said, her voice tight as she examined the heavy reinforced steel door.
"Daniel, can we force the hinges?" Mason asked.
"Not without cutting torches or hydraulic spreaders," Daniel answered, inspecting the vault frame. "This was built to withstand Cold War bomb blasts."
Mason looked around the room, analyzing the layout. His eyes caught the ceiling ventilation shaft—an old galvanized steel duct that connected to the building's legacy boiler room.
"Maya, how much weight can that secondary ventilation shaft support?" Mason asked.
Maya climbed onto a sturdy filing cabinet and examined the ductwork. "It's eighteen inches wide. A full-grown adult can't fit, but someone with a slender build could crawl through to the maintenance chute!"
"I'm going," Mason said without hesitation.
Daniel grabbed his arm, his eyes full of concern. "Mason, that duct is sixty feet of rusted sheet metal over an active steam boiler. If a rivet fails, you fall."
"My father didn't hesitate when he crawled into your crushed truck, Captain," Mason smiled gently. "I'm not going to let this town lose its heart."
With Daniel and Maya boosting him upward, Mason removed the intake grille and shimmied into the narrow, dark metal shaft.
Crawling inch by inch through dust and spiderwebs, Mason pushed forward, clutching the 1984 land deed inside his waterproof satchel. The metal groaned beneath his weight, and waves of intense heat rose from the boiler below.
With a final surge of effort, Mason kicked open the exhaust louvers in the boiler room, tumbled onto the concrete floor, and hit the emergency override release for the vault door!

The heavy steel door swung open, freeing Daniel and Maya.
"Let's move!" Daniel shouted. "It's 7:00 a.m. The demolition crews are already staging across from the cafe!"
