Chapter 22 - The Vault of Memories

That night, with Mayor Whitaker's special authorization, Mason, Maya, and Daniel descended into the subterranean archive vaults beneath the Old County Hall.
Rows of towering steel shelves housed thousands of bound leather ledgers dating back over a century. The air was cool, smelling of aged parchment, cedar, and ink.
"Here it is," Maya called out, pointing to a heavy metal cabinet labeled *Municipal Land Transfers 1980-1988.*
Mason carefully pulled out the thick leather binder for 1984. As they turned the yellowed parchment pages, they found the original title deed for the downtown civic square.
Daniel held a flashlight close as Mason scanned the legal signatures.
"Look right here," Mason pointed with trembling fingers. "In October 1984, Arthur Callahan signed over the entire four-acre parcel to the Oakridge Fire & Medical Relief Society in exchange for a full municipal indemnity bond to dismiss his grand larceny charges!"
Maya gasped. "Which means Arthur legally surrendered all rights to the land before he ever fled to Canada! The land never belonged to his private estate!"
"And look at the witness signature on the deed," Daniel said, his voice thick with wonder.
At the bottom of the parchment, signed with an elegant, steady hand, was the name: *Elliot Reed, Volunteer Paramedic Liaison.*
"My dad witnessed the transfer," Mason whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek. "Even from beyond the grave, he left the key to protect us."
Suddenly, the heavy steel security door of the basement vault slammed shut with a thunderous *CLANG!*

The mechanical lock turned from the outside, trapping them inside the subterranean vault!
Over the internal intercom system, Martin Callahan's mocking voice crackled: "Did you really think I wouldn't track your car, Mason? Enjoy the archives. By morning, the emergency demolition order will already be signed."
