Chapter 8 - The Safehouse Above the Siren

With the Reed family home cordoned off as an active crime scene, Daniel Brooks brought Claire and Mason to the only place in Oakridge with twenty-four-hour armed protection and unwavering loyalty: Station Four.

The upper floor of the firehouse contained living quarters, a full kitchen, and private bunks. Firefighters took turns bringing blankets, hot soup, and dry clothes for Claire, treating her like royalty.

"You're safe here, Mrs. Reed," Lieutenant Alvarez said warmly as he handed her a mug of hot cocoa. "No one enters this station without passing through us."

In the captain's private office, Daniel, Mason, and Fire Marshal Sarah Lin set up a cassette player on the metal desk. Daniel pressed play.

The tape hissed with static before Elliot Reed's distinct, calm voice filled the room:

*“This is Paramedic Elliot Reed, Unit 12. Date: November 12th. I am recording this from the trauma bay. The tanker at Highway 26 carried unrefined industrial Trichloroethylene from Sterling Chem-Corp. Vance Sterling offered me a five-hundred-thousand-dollar cash payoff at the scene to sign a falsified containment report. When I refused, he threatened my family. If this tape is being reviewed, it means I did not survive to testify before the grand jury. Do not let him poison our home.”*

The tape ended with the distant sound of hospital monitors.

Sarah Lin clenched her fists until her knuckles turned white. "This audio, combined with the chemical manifests from Laura Callahan's files, is enough for an emergency federal arrest warrant. But Vance Sterling has private security, and his lawyers have judges on retainer across three counties. If we move without federal marshals, he'll flee the country on his private jet."

"Then we trap him where he feels most powerful," Mason said, his voice remarkably steady for an eighteen-year-old.

Daniel looked at him with keen interest. "What do you have in mind, Mason?"

"Tomorrow night is the Oakridge Commerce Gala at the Grand Plaza Hotel," Mason explained. "Sterling is scheduled to receive the Civic Leadership Award and sign the final deed transferring Station Four and Riverside Coffee to his demolition company. The entire city council, press, and public will be in that ballroom."

Daniel's face broke into a grim, determined smile. "You want to confront the beast in his own den, in front of every television camera in the state."

"He spent fourteen years hiding in the dark," Mason said firmly. "It's time to bring him into the light."
