Chapter 28 - An Echo Across Highway 26

Three weeks after graduation, Mason worked his first official shift as Lead Paramedic on Medic Unit 4, stationed alongside Captain Daniel Brooks at Station Four.
At 3:15 p.m. on a stormy summer afternoon, the firehouse sirens wailed in an urgent, high-priority alarm.
The automated dispatch voice echoed over the PA system: *“Engine 4, Medic 4, respond immediately to Highway 26 at Mile Marker 14. Major multi-vehicle collision with trapped victims and active fire.”*
Daniel and Mason locked eyes across the apparatus bay.
Highway 26. Mile Marker 14.
The exact location where Elliot Reed had saved Daniel Brooks fourteen years ago.
"Suit up!" Daniel ordered, his voice sharp and focused.
Within sixty seconds, Engine 4 and Medic 4 roared out of the station with sirens screaming, cutting through the heavy sheets of rain toward the mountain pass.
When they arrived on scene, the sight was harrowing. A tour bus carrying twenty senior citizens had been forced off the road by a jackknifed utility truck during the downpour. The bus was precariously balanced against the guardrail over a forty-foot ravine, its engine compartment engulfed in roaring flames.
"The fuel tank is compromised!" Lieutenant Alvarez shouted. "We have less than five minutes before total structural failure!"
"Deploy foam lines!" Daniel commanded. "Alvarez, stabilize the rear axle! Mason, with me through the front windshield!"
Mason grabbed his heavy trauma kit and rescue extraction shears. Without a second of hesitation, he scrambled up the shattered hood of the bus, kicked through the cracked safety glass of the windshield, and dropped into the smoky passenger cabin.
Elderly passengers were trapped in their seats, coughing from the smoke and screaming in terror.
"Listen to my voice!" Mason called out with absolute calm authority. "My name is Mason Reed, Oakridge EMS! We are going to get every single one of you out safely! Follow the red emergency lights to my crew at the rear exit!"
Working with rapid, surgical precision, Mason cut away jammed seatbelts, lifted trapped passengers from the twisted metal seats, and handed them down to Daniel and the firefighters waiting at the emergency doors.
With only ninety seconds remaining, Mason spotted the driver pinned beneath the crushed steering column, bleeding heavily from his head.
"Mason, the engine block is collapsing! We need to evacuate now!" Daniel shouted from the front window.
"I'm not leaving him!" Mason yelled back.
Mason wedged the hydraulic spreader beneath the column, applied full pressure, and freed the driver's legs. With a mighty heave, Mason hoisted the unconscious driver onto his shoulders and leaped through the front windshield into Daniel's waiting arms just as the bus's fuel tank erupted in a massive fireball!
The crowd of rescued passengers and first responders watched in awe as the burning wreckage slid safely into the ravine.
Every single passenger was saved. Not a single life was lost.

Daniel looked at Mason, whose turnout coat was streaked with soot and rain, breathing hard with a radiant smile on his face.
"Elliot," Daniel whispered softly into the rain, his heart overflowing. "He did it again."
