Chapter 24 - Stand at the Barricade

The morning sun broke through the autumn mist over Riverside Street to reveal a dramatic, tense standoff.
Three heavy yellow bulldozers and two wrecking cranes were parked in front of Riverside Coffee, their engines rumbling with menacing vibration. Arthur Callahan sat in the passenger seat of a luxury town car, while Martin directed the demolition crew foreman.
A crowd of over three hundred Oakridge citizens—firefighters in turnout gear, nurses, local business owners, and families holding protest signs—formed a human wall across the front steps of the cafe and Station Four.
"Get out of the way!" Martin yelled through a megaphone. "We have a valid court order! If you don't disperse in five minutes, the police will arrest every single one of you!"
Peter Callahan stood at the center of the human chain, his arms locked with Lieutenant Alvarez and Claire Reed. "You will have to run over us first, Martin!"
The demolition foreman turned to Martin. "Mr. Callahan, I'm not driving heavy machinery into a crowd of women and off-duty firefighters. That's vehicular assault."
"I am paying you double!" Arthur shouted from the car window. "Start the machines!"
*WHEEEEE-OOOOOO!*
A chorus of sirens shattered the morning air as Mayor Helen Whitaker's motorcade, flanked by two State Police interceptors and Engine 4, roared onto Riverside Street, blocking the bulldozers with flashing red and blue lights.
Mason leaped from the front seat of Engine 4, holding the certified 1984 deed high in the air for the crowd and news cameras to see.
"Hold your fire!" Mason's voice resonated through the street. "Arthur Callahan has no legal ownership of this land!"
Mayor Whitaker marched directly to the demolition foreman and presented the certified injunction from the State Supreme Court. "Demolition permit revoked immediately. Disarm your equipment."
Arthur Callahan stumbled out of his car, his face purple with rage. "This is impossible! That document was destroyed!"
"My father witnessed your signature forty years ago, Arthur," Mason said, walking up to the old man with unwavering dignity. "You traded this land for your freedom in 1984. You have no claim, no deed, and no power here."
State Police officers stepped forward, presenting a new federal warrant. "Arthur Callahan, Martin Callahan, you are both under arrest for fraud, conspiracy, and unlawful endangerment."

The entire street erupted into a triumphant roar of cheers and applause as the handcuffs were fastened onto both men.
Peter Callahan closed his eyes, weeping tears of profound relief as Claire and Daniel embraced him warmly.
