Chapter 9 - The Gathering of Allies

By morning, word of the arson attack on the Reed home had spread like wildfire throughout Oakridge. But instead of intimidating the town, Sterling's ruthless attack ignited a wave of fierce community solidarity.

At Riverside Coffee, Peter Callahan oversaw an unprecedented mobilization. Dozens of local citizens—mechanics, nurses, teachers, truck drivers, and small business owners—crowded into the cafe.

"We aren't letting Vance Sterling tear down this station or run the Reed family out of town!" Peter announced from atop a sturdy wooden chair. "Sterling thinks he owns Oakridge because he has millions in offshore bank accounts. But we own the heartbeat of this city!"

Mayor Helen Whitaker arrived with a team of state investigators. "Federal Marshals have officially unsealed the emergency indictment," the Mayor declared to the room. "Sterling's private jet has been grounded at Oakridge Regional Airport. Tonight, justice will be served."

Meanwhile, in the firehouse locker room, Daniel presented Mason with a clean, dark navy dress uniform with gold buttons—the honorary ceremonial uniform of the County Paramedic Corps.

"Put it on, son," Daniel said softly.

Mason ran his fingers over the crisp fabric and the embroidered emblem on the shoulder. "Captain, I'm not a licensed paramedic."

"Your father was the bravest man who ever wore this patch," Daniel said, pinning the silver Saint Florian medal above the left breast pocket. "And today, you are carrying his mission across the finish line. Wear it with pride."

When Mason stepped out into the apparatus bay wearing his father's colors, the entire company of Station Four came to attention and rendered a crisp, synchronized salute.

Mason swallowed the emotion rising in his throat and saluted back. "Let's finish this."
